Still riding the Crazy Mouse at the State Fair of Texas. (My second favorite State Fair tradition)
We always buy the picture….The one they take just as the car is about to drop.
Sometimes we ride it alone;
Sometimes a friend or 2 will join us; like the Pecks…
Or our friend, Leslie…..
Or even my brother Ben,
But this year…..
…..the carney insisted on shoving a lonely little boy in between us,
Don’t think he enjoyed it as much as we did.
(Interesting way to see how much weight we have each gained/lost over the years……I’m down about 25 pounds, and Jamie has lost just over 50. Zoom up to the fourth and fifth pictures. It doesn’t look like anyone else would fit in that cart with us)
If I say,”The Texas State Fair”.
Any decent Texan will automatically think of Big Tex and Fletcher’s corny dogs.
Yepp, we also think of both of those things….
But we also think of the Crazy Mouse ride.
Last week, with our busy travel schedules, we managed to make it to the State Fair of Texas.
Even with all the rickety carnival rides to choose from on the midway, there is only one ride that we wouldn’t miss out on…the Crazy Mouse.
It’s also the only ride at the fair with a camera that takes pictures.
We ALWAYS buy this picture……I love the sheer joy that we undoubtedly have on our faces just as we drop 4 stories (and how we look sick and excited at the same time).
Here are those pictures from the past 6 years.
Can you hear us laughing/screaming just looking at these pictures?
Every time we see them.
( UPDATE on this post )
I couldn’t ignore the fact that just a few hours after we posted this post, Big Tex caught an electrical fire that singed him into nothing but a metal skeleton in a matter of minutes. And on his 60th birthday too……
No doubt that the kind folks at Dickies will have him better than ever by this time next year,
but still, he will be missed…….
The last week of September is the start the State Fair of Texas, and I haven’t missed going to one for the past 15 years now. After we have spent all day gorging ourselves on deep-fried PB&Js, jalapeno-cheese corny dogs, roasted corn, and warmish beer…. we head to the very back of the midway to ride the Crazy Mouse. It’s a rickety, colorful small-ish roller coaster that has been in the same place for as long as I can remember. When I was a teen, I had the energy to try all the swirly mechanical amusements, but now that I’m older, this is the only one that I can stomach. It’s also the only one at the fair where they take a digital picture just as the car drops. I ALWAYS buy this picture……I love the sheer joy that we undoubtedly seem to have on our faces just as we fall 4 stories…..and how we look sick and excited at the same time.
Usually it is near dusk by the time we have headed to the Crazy Mouse and the early October sunset streaks the sky with orange and pink behind us. Other times it is at night and the colors seem unnaturally bright from the carnival lights all around. This picture is right in between both of those moments…..
When you come in the front door of our house, the wall immediately on the left is covered in photos (vacations, old family pictures……and several of these roller coaster images……)
I can hear the laughter every time I look at them.
