Vintage Boy Scout Handbook

Posted by James on March 23, 2013
Posted in: Did Ya Know?, New Home. Tagged: Boy Scout of America, illustration, Norman Rockwell Cover. 6 Comments

Found this old Boy Scout Handbook from 1963 a few years ago.

Boy Scout Handbook with Normal Rockwell Cover

Originally titled The Official Handbook for Boys, it was first published in 1910 and written by Earnest Thompson Seton. He based his version of the handbook on Baden-Powell’s Scouting for Boys. There have been 12 editions and 3 more authors since the first printing. Mine is the 6th edition written by William “Green Bar Bill” Hillcourt. He was a scouting legend.

As you can see, it belonged to Larry E. Carnaher. I Googled him. No results.

If anyone knows him, tell him that I have his book.

I had forgotten that Normal Rockwell did the cover illustration. But, who else could have? I think it’s perfect.

When Norman Rockwell was 19 years old he was made the Art Editor for the Boy Scouts scouting magazine A Boy’s Life. It was here that he had his first published magazine cover. He contributed annually to the Boy Scouts calendar between 1925 and 1976, and in 1939 was awarded the The Silver Buffalo Award from the Scouts; the highest adult award they offer.

The cover isn’t nearly this beautiful anymore. There’s a raft full of multi-racial (but still Christian) Scouts, a bald eagle head, and some of the American flag.

Inside are all the instructions to be a well-rounded young man that I remembered.

The most important lesson, Becoming a man……..

From A Boy to a Man

My brothers and I were all Scouts. We join the ranks of some pretty great men; Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford, John F. Kennedy, Bill Clinton, Sam Walton, Bill Gates, and Neil Armstrong.

The Boy Scout’s lessons of honesty, working within a group dynamic, and always striving to do your very best have followed me my entire life.

I took my copy of this book on hikes, campouts, pretty much daily to school, and it was with me anytime there was an outdoor fire involved.

I remember reading this book to the point of duct taping the spine together when I was a kid.

Larry was much more gentle with his copy. Not a single dog-ear.

“So Long, and Sorry About All the Pillows”

Posted by James on March 22, 2013
Posted in: New Home. Tagged: Apartment Therapy, home, Master Bedroom, style. 26 Comments

We did it again.

We made it into yet another Apartment Therapy contest where people judge our lack of style….

Oh Joy!

Apartment Therapy Bedroom Contest

That’s our fluffy, Texas-ISH bedroom, and of course our offensive longhorns and exorbitant amount of pillows, on the Apartment Therapy Bedroom Retreat Contest.

For all of y’all wondering….No, we don’t sleep with all those pillows on the bed with us. Half of them are gently stacked it the corner most of the year………unless, there is a photo shoot, or someone worth while is visiting.

Nuff Said.

If y’all care too, please go to the site and vote for us. We could win a new bed. (that we will probably just cover in even more pillows)

Oh Oh Oh!!!! Don’t forget to read the comments that the A.T. community has left about our simple little room.

They…..Are….Priceless.

Bandana Pillows

Posted by James on March 17, 2013
Posted in: New Home, Projects. Tagged: Bandana, Living Room, Pillows. 16 Comments

Bandana Pillows are so easy to make.

Even with my minimal sewing skills (I specialize in Almost perfect straight lines), I can chunk out a couple of pillows in about an hour.

We found these black-ish and red bandanas at the craft store for 2 bucks each.

2 Dollar Bandanas from the craft store

The print is very cool, but the cotton is so stiff from the printing process.

Awesome Red and Black Bandana

The best way to break in a bandana is to actually USE it. I know that may sound gross, but it’s really snot.

(Sorry,)

If you can find old used ones, I highly recommend it. If not, and like us, you want both sides of the pillow to match, you can just buy new ones.

Jamie ran our bandanas through the wash a couple of times, and I ironed them flat.

I lay 2 bandanas face to face and pinned them to keep from shifting while I sewed.

Bandanas Face To Face

This is where my unbelievable sewing skills come in handy.

A straight line around 3 edges…..

Sewing the edges of my Bandana Pillows

…and just a few inches in on each side of the bottom.

Bandanas with Edges Sewn Together2

I turn my cases inside out and carefully squeeze a down feather insert through the opening and hand-stich it closed.

I know you will be tempted with polyester filling…but it’s cheap and will look cheap too. It will just clump. Our thought is that if we only spent 4 bucks on bandanas…..we can splurge a little and buy a decent insert (maybe $16 for a 20 inch insert). It will make a world of difference.

Trust us on this one.

Here’s our finished bandana pillow in the living room.

Finished Bandana Pillow

Told ya they were easy.

Copied Again

Once again Country Living Magazine steals our good ideas…

Case in Point.

This “awesomeness” in a magnifying glass that we wrote about last week.

Franklin Magnifier

Get this.

Those ballsy editors at Country Living Magazine had the audacity to write about it last month.

Country Living Magnifiers

The nerve,

……and somehow they manage to do it weeks before we did.

Perot Museum of Nature and Science

Posted by James on March 14, 2013

Spring Break in Dallas.

We don’t have kids, and it doesn’t look like we will have any anytime soon. Not without a court order, or some sort of divine intervention we won’t.

We have to borrow other people’s kids.

My Godson Winston is on spring break in Lubbock, so we dragged him to the big city to spend a few days. He’s 17 now, and I know that his visits will be less frequent as he gets older and has less interest in hanging out with a couple of “old gays”.

Jamie’s Nephew Juston, on the other hand, is only 9 so we have a few years of him left.

We took the boys to the newly opened Perot Museum of Nature and Science.

The hovering escalator is the most distinctive feature of the building.

In the Life Then and Now Hall they have filled the place with fossils and remains…….. Many of which were actually found in north Texas.

Hard to believe that these giant beasts once roamed Texas.

Winston shares that same fascination for old dead things that I have.

Winston and the Old Bones

The Gems and Minerals Hall was amazing. This “human-sized”  geode was controlled with a wheel to make it open and close.

Huge Geod on a control Wheel to Make it Open

We all liked the tornado exhibit in the Dynamic Earth Hall. Although it doesn’t photograph very well.

Tornado Making Machine

There was also an earthquake simulator that let us experience a 9 on the Richter scale first hand.

It was agreed on by all of us that the freeze-dried human slices in Being Human Hall were pretty disgusting.

Freeze Dried Slice of a Human Male

Freeze Dried Slice of a Human Female

While the female looks kinda muscular, the dude seems a little out of shape. And what is up with the hump on the back?

These “Mickey Mouse” shaped molecules hanging in the lobby were certainly fun. They would rise up in the air whenever someone walked under them. We made it a goal to run in circles under them until they were all moving at the same time.

Blue Orbs in the Lobby

This is a tough place to visit. It was Tuesday, but still filled with people. The newness buzz keeps this place sold out every day. We thought ahead and bought tickets a couple of weeks ago. I’d advise the same of anyone else wanting to visit.

There isn’t really an order to the exhibits, so kids (and grown-up kids) are free to look and touch anything for as long as they wish. And trust me there are lots of things to touch.

Starting at the top floor and working our way down, and opting out of the 45 minute movies, we spent about 3 hours total.

…and 3 hours was plenty of time.

Juston Sleeping in The Car

Some of us ……. even fell asleep in the car on the way home.

A Few Dart Boards More…..

A few weeks ago we posted about Target Practice Art for your home.

Found these beauties yesterday while junk shopping.

The cheapest was $19, the most expenive was $25.

Dartboard 1

Dartboard 2

Dartboard 3

All 3 would make a perfct display on a wall together,

$60 isn’t bad, although I’d rather find them for a couple bucks each at garage sales…….

But if you’re looking for several in a hurry, this could work.

Boats on the Ceiling

I thought this might be a “one time” thing,

But we found quite a few images of boats and canoes on ceilings…

Just look,

And one used as a bookshelf.

Now, how dreamy are those?

Especially over a bed…….

How I wish,

I Wish so hard,

That we had a place to hang a boat inside the Cavender house.

New/Old Steamer Trunk

Posted by James on March 6, 2013
Posted in: New Home, Projects. Tagged: Black Paint, Hotel Stickers, Louis Vuitton Postcards, transportation, Vintage Luois Vuitton, Vintage Steamer Trunk. 34 Comments

Who doesn’t  love a vintage steamer trunk.

It’s traveled, It has experience, It’s been on adventures.

I’ve had this old canvas trunk for almost 10 years now, but have never been in love with it. (another dumpster dive find)

No, It’s not Goyard, or Louis Vuitton. or anything else pedigreed. But it has some decent qualities.

Vintage Brown Trunk

It no longer has a hinge, so basically it is just a bottom with a separate lid. Like a box.

The gun-metal hardware is pretty suave. (it was brass once upon a time) But those honey colored wood strips wrapping delicately around it are by far it’s best feature. Too bad they blend into the brown-ISH canvas.

Corner of Vintage Trunk

I’m not to sure who H.M.K. was.

H. M. K. on side of Vintage Trunk

I have a theory that he might be – “His Majesty (the) King”

Yeah Right. Wouldn’t that be cool? You know, ’til we paint over it. Ohhh yeah, we’re going to paint it.

BLACK, we paint everything black.

I’m sure some of you purists are gasping right now. But trust me on this one, it’s going to be way, much, more better.

I started with a roll of frog tape. If you have never used frog tape, give it a shot. It’s some kind of voodoo for painting.

I taped off everything that I didn’t want black – all the wood trim and the hardware.

Vintage Steamer Trunk Taped with Frog Tape

Stripes were painted on trunks to help porters quickly identify a specific traveler’s luggage.

This one is a winner.

Black Trunk with Awesome Stripes

Of course, I found a cool Louis Vuitton with stripes too.

Vintage Louis Vuitton Cube Trunk

To give my trunk some much-needed stripes, I started by spraying the center white.

Vintage Trunk with Painted White Center Section

Then I add a couple of strips of frog tape wrapped around the whole trunk.

I spray another layer of white on top of the tape.

White Spray over Frog Tape

This is a trick to make sure all my bleed-thru (if there is any with the frog tape) is white…..pretty clever.

I painted the entire trunk black. (Ralph Lauren “Granite”, same paint as our fireplace) The center stripe (between the 2 strips of frog tape) I painted Martha Stewart “Barn” red.

No special reason for these specific colors – these were just leftover paints in the garage.

Old trunk Painted Black and Red over Tape

When I peel back the frog tape…..the beautiful crisp stripes are revealed.

Peeling Back the Tape on the Stripes

Beautiful, but just a bit bright.

I sponged over them with a little glaze mixed with a few drops of brown paint to tone down the bright white.

In the movie “It’s a Wonderful Life”, Jimmy Stewart searches for a big suitcase with plenty of room for stickers.

Stickers indeed.

Vintage Travel Sticker Collage

All those ripped faded stickers….Drool

It just so happens that Jamie gave me a box set of travel sticker postcards for Valentine’s Day.

Louis Vuitton Hotel Label Postcard Box

It was filled with 30 postcards inspired by vintage hotel labels taken from the Louis Vuitton archives.

Louis Vuitton Vintage Hotel Label Postcards

I also found this tin of travel stickers on Amazon, 12 bucks didn’t seem like too much to pay.

Cavallini Bon Voyage Travel Stickers

This set offered more claim checks and shipping tags. I like all the red too, especially in the Cunard and White Star tags.

Bon Voyage Shipping Stickers

I’m a nut for all the graphics, but they were just a bit glossy for this project. Jamie scanned them and printed them on both card stock and regular paper, muting all the overly bright colors just slightly.

I laid them all out and gave each a spritz with coffee.

Spritz Paper Lables with Coffee

That’s right, coffee…..a spritz with a very watered down version and a second splattering with a strong one.

Paper Luggage Tags sprayed with Coffee

After they dried, and crumpled nicely too I might add, I just spread on Modpodge with a small brush……

Spread Modpodge with a Small Paintbrush

….and then pressed them in place.

Press them in Place on the Trunk

That takes care of the stickers……

Ready for the finished trunk?

Ba-Bam!!!

Black Painted trunk with Plenty of Travel Stickers

I think this could be a cool idea to reinvent an old dresser with stripes and travel stickers.

Black Painted trunk Side with Travel Stickers

I painted the handles black too.

Black Painted trunk Corner

How beautiful are those wood strips now?

Top of Black Painted trunk with Vintage Travel Stickers

And it fits under the rustic coffee table we revamped last month.

Corner of Black Painted trunk Under Coffee Table in Living Room

Now that mangy old trunk looks like it’s been around the world.

Way, More, Much Better…

Go ahead………Admit it, I was right.
