Chief Sitting Bear by Edward Sheriff Curtis

We are both a little overwhelmed by the reception we have had with our attempt at a house tour. It’s a combination of flattering and Scarry-As-Hell to discover that pictures of our house have been copied and posted on other sites. Check out Houzz, Pinterest, Color Outside The Lines, and Alamodeus. Now I’m talking about the pictures OTHER people have posted……(clears throat) not just us,(clears throat… again)

We just hope that we can live up to all the expectations……

Now something we really didn’t expect …..was all the questions about our giant Indian canvas in the den.

Cher, here’s a better shot just for you.

He is Chief Sitting Bear by the famed American photographer Edward Sheriff Curtis…..Seen here…..

One of my all time favorite photographers….and I really dig his sweet stache and choice of headwear.

Curtis spent his life photographing the native American people. Originally financed by J P Morgan who produced a 20 volume set with over 1,500 photos titled “The North American Indian”. Curtis’ goal was not just to photograph, but to document, as much American Indian (Native American) traditional life as possible before that way of life completely disappeared. He took over 40,000 photographic images from over 80 tribes in the difficult gravure process that gave the sepia photos an almost 3 dimensional quality. Curtis also wrote biographical sketches of tribal leaders, and his material, in most cases, is the only recorded history of that tribe. He is also credited with producing almost 10,000 audio recordings of native speech and song.

He was often harshly criticised for removing modern items, like clocks and umbrellas, from photos and for stereotyping his subjects by posing them in costumes. Ultimately, his opus took twenty-five years to complete, bankrupting him and draining himself both physically and emotionally. Curtis eventually lost the bulk of his Native American negatives to his wife in a divorce settlement, most of which he destroyed rather than give up to her. Lecturing extensively to solicit financial support for his work led him to a nervous breakdown in 1930. He died almost penny-less at his daughter’s house in 1952 with a majority of his documentation not even seen by public eyes – until its discovery in a Boston basement in 1972.

Now you can buy his images printed on nylon scrim at Ikea.

Just like we did a few years ago.

The Longhorn Horns

Posted by James on February 12, 2012
Posted in: New Home. Tagged: Black Spray Paint, bugs bunny cartoons, Longhorns, Master Bedroom, oil money, spray paint, Wood Wall. 6 Comments

In 1980, when my family first moved to Dallas, the only things I knew about Texas I had learned from watching Bugs Bunny cartoons. Remember the little Texan guy who was just a giant cowboy hat and mustache? He was always looking for oil and had longhorns on the hood of his Cadillac. I’ve lived in Texas more than 30 years and have yet to see car with longhorns on the hood.

But I do have friends who reminisce about childhood Christmases when their family’s still had “OIL-Money”.

A few years ago, a dear friend gave me these longhorns for Halloween. You read that right, Halloween. She knew that I would appreciate them….and she was right. Lord knows how I love free things.

They have been hanging over my bed for more than a decade.

After building our beautiful wood wall in the master bedroom, I wasn’t quite sure if the longhorns would look “right” on the new wall. They are just oodles of coolness, and I’m not sure if we could sleep soundly without them dangling precariously overhead, (but the weird little faux croc, brass studs, and rope accents wrapped through the middle seemed kinda busy). Even that wood plaque they are attached to had to change. Since there is no way on earth that I would ever part with anything…Something had to be done…..

No worries, that’s why we keep black spray paint in the house…just for black spray paint emergencies.

A shopping bag and some painters tape later….

Now the beautiful horns stand out against the new walls, I hardly even notice all the jumbled mess goin’ on in the middle…..

Way. More. Much. Better.

Master Bedroom House Tour

Posted by James on February 8, 2012
Posted in: House Tour, New Home. Tagged: House Tour, Master Bedroom, Navajo Bedding, Oak Office Chair, peg rack, restoration hardware, Sawhorse Desk, Thrift store, turquoise collection, vintage bandannas, Wood Wall. 35 Comments

After working all weekend on our master bedroom, I knew it was the perfect time to click a few pics to continue that house tour we have been promising.  So, after Jamie ironed all the sheets and pillow cases…we were ready to go.

Y’all might remember that when we built our wood wall we were a little worried that our headboard would disappear against the darkness of the wood. But it’s just the opposite…. It stands out nicely. Those Restoration Hardware sconces are by farrrrr my favorite things in this room. Can’t believe I hesitated buying them. I could have been enjoying them for the past year…..and not just the past week.

The sawhorse desk we got at West Elm. It’s smaller than most of the ones I’ve seen elsewhere, but that makes it perfect for the side of the bed. I don’t think they sell them anymore…Shame. The oak office chair we picked up at the Salvation Army down the street from our house. I think that it gives the room an instant feeling of  “History”.

I promise that for the sake of the pictures I scaled down on all the crap that is usually on my desk. I moved the piles of  half-read, intending-too-read, and finished-reading books to the guest room. The big black bowl started as a catch-all for just western belt buckles from thrift stores, and now they are under all that other stuff.  I started collecting them after I saw a picture of a mirror framed in old Western buckles. I was gunna make my own version, but I couldn’t decide on which buckles I would sacrifice wearing by hot-glueing them to a mirror. So there ya go. The black Frankoma indian (possibly an ashtray) I picked up on eBay a few weeks ago. Her bowl is filled with silver/turquoise pins and fetishes from our trips around the Southwest.

On the 3 Ikea Malm dressers that we pushed together under the window are a couple of pictures that don’t fit anywhere on the wall, a jar of vintage baseballs, and a Madonna from Dolly Python dripping with necklaces.

Vintage canning jars on the window sill hold sea shells, sea glass, and other little found items from our Summer vacations in the Caribbean.

A couple of Navajo baskets, on the other end of the dressers, hold vintage bandannas (a couple of which were supposed to be made into pillows) and silver and turquoise jewelry. We pick up a lot of jewelry at junk shops here in the Southwest.

Because of our lack of closet space, we hang our jackets on a peg rack on the wall. I think that the AMERICAN sign was once on an American Airlines building. I got it at a junk shop here in Dallas. They couldn’t find the “AN”, so for about a month I only had “AMERIC” with the thin hope that someone at the shop would find the rest of the word……..of corse they did, I knew they would all along.

The boots didn’t fit in the closet either….so there they are.

I don’t think a space should be too modern or too vintage, but an eclectic mix of both….that’s what makes a home interesting.

Wood Wall Completed

Posted by James on February 5, 2012
Posted in: New Home. Tagged: Electrical Work, Master Bedroom, orange sheets, restoration hardware, sconces, temporary wiring, Wood Wall. 61 Comments

A few of you may remember that just a couple of weeks ago I posted about my intentions of building an accent wall in our master bedroom. At said time, I may possibly have mentioned that it would be very cool to make this wall from reclaimed shipping pallets. Well ya know what? Pallets are kinda nasty. Lord knows that we tried, I filled Jamie’s new car with an alley full of them. I even spent a couple of hours in the driveway prying rusty nails out of this pile…..And what was left was really not that pretty. Not pretty at all…..Every board was a hot mess of different colors, thicknesses, smells…..etc. I know that pallet related crafts are very trendy right now, upcycling and all that, but they just didn’t have that “Modern” look that we wanted.

So we scrapped that idea and went in a slightly different direction….with new wood. 1×8 pine planks…The cheap ones, I swear. It’s the knots that make it look so AWESOME. They weren’t free like the pallets would have been, but the entire project (wood, stain, toggle screws…can’t think of anything else) was only about $125.

TAAAA DAAAA!!!! Almost looks like a picture from a catalog.

You might recall that 2 years ago the master bedroom looked like this. Not anymore…just look at all that Spectacularness…..

It all started with those groovy 1900s Pharmacy Sconces from Restoration Hardware. They are supposed to be hardwired, and they’re heavy as hell. I’m never very excited about hard wiring a 30 pound light fixture to drywall….soooo the wood accent wall idea was born…. almost like a second headboard. A lot of people don’t know that you can put a plug on a hardwire light fixture. Just sayin’.

I first had to determine where on the side of the bed they would fit. We only had 8 feet of board width to work with. Because we didn’t want to have to cut any boards, and a 10 foot board would have been off-centered from the headboard because of that small window. The 8 foot planks gave us 18 inches of wood on either side of the bed to center our new sconces. Just enough room

RH shows them pointing down, but I think they look way better with the light on top of the fixture.

Working with the 8 foot that pine planks come in, we measured out 8 feet of wall and toggle screwed  1X4s too attach our planks to. The smaller pieces are where the lamps will be. Since they are so heavy, we added these planks to screw them into.

The only problem with that is that there isn’t a space to run the power behind the boards. After all this work, I don’t want to see a cord running down the front of our beautiful wall. So I carved a little channel into the boards and ran my power cable (actually an extension cord with the female end cut off ) through. I hot glued the hell out of it to keep it in place.  My brother teases me that my tool box is more like a “craft kit” because no handy man would use a hot-glue gun. Trust me on this one folks, it is a lifesaver sometimes. Buy a hot glue gun…the big one. I’m not sure why they even bother making the small glue guns.

We started nailing the planks from the top down, because those are really the first ones anyone will see.  This is the first time we used the nail gun since replacing the stolen one last  November. True story here, when we were in H-Depot to replace our stolen air compressor/nail gun, I complained so much about how expensive it was for both pieces…that the sales girl (Sharday – but not spelled nearly this phonetically ) offered to just give me a discontinued floor-model nail gun if I would just buy an air compressor and leave. I took her up on her offer.

Here’s that new nail gun in action….Well sort of “action”. You get the idea. To keep the boards as pristine as possible, I only shot nails in the bottoms and sides. Occasionally I would nail one on the face if it was particularly warped, but I’ll bet you can’t find any holes. The only holes are the 2 we made to run our power wires through.

I didn’t take long at all before we had this….Slight gap on the top right, and slight gap on the left bottom…..but who really even see them? You didn’t, ’till I pointed them out.

I trimmed the edges with  strips of 1×2 to frame off the wall. I notched out the bottoms to fit around the baseboard and leave just enough room for the power cord to escape.

See…

We bought 3 stains – Ebony, Jacobean, and a water-based Ebony. We were both leaning toward one of the ebonys…and wouldn’t you know it? It was the Jacobean that we both agreed on…almost immediately after testing all 3. It looked perfect against our headboard…and didn’t make the room feel like the big black box that we were dreading. Black rug, Black bed, Black dressers…etc.

It’s a little known secret of staining that if you moisten the wood first, it will absorb the stain and spread it easily. I’ll be the first to let you that the stain will go on so much smoother if you do this. Just wipe the whole mess down with a damp rag. Go on, wipe.  I know it doesn’t make much sense with an oil based stain….but for some reason it works.

So on went the oil-based Jacobean, old rag, rubber gloves, rubbed with the grain, slightly moistened wood….You get the idea.

Maybe about 15 minutes later, we had this.

Stained Wall Before Lamps 2

Breath Taking……..

We pushed the bed into place and wired the lamps with the little cords I left sticking through. I prolly need to say that these were NOT plugged in at this time. I know it seems silly, but I don’t want anyone sending me warnings about electricity safety. I know better than that, Sheesh. After all, I’m wiring light fixtures with slashed extension cords and a glue gun…..Ahhh, I think I know what I’m doing.

I wired my fixture together with wire caps AND electrical tape. The tape isn’t so much for safety, but just to keep everything attached while I cram it all into the back of my swing arm lamp. It’s a real pain to wire a fixture together then have to disassemble it because the wires came loose. There is also that ever-so-slight possibility of electrocution too.

And there we have our new lamps….. One on each side of the bed.

Restoration Hardware Pharmacy Sconce on the New Wood Wall

I build sets for a living, among numerous other talents that I have, so I gave this project a couple of hours. Far from it . We started around 10 AM, and about 10:30 that night we were struggling to get the room “Sleep-able”.  The only Home Depot trip was for stain, we bought all the lumber the day before. For time clarity, I have to also add that with the furniture out of the room this was the perfect opportunity to finish installing quarter round, the missing trim piece over my closet, and paint all the trim that wasn’t white, white.

Jamie pulled the orange jersey sheets from the cupboard and I loved the way they looked with the wall so much, that we used them for the photo shoot. “Juicy”, ain’t they?

And here’s the little guy that started the whole project…..

Finished Wood Wall with Restoration Hardware Pharmacy Sconce

We love the look of this project so much that we have been looking at other places in the house where we can  add a beautiful wood accent wall.

Of course, we could use that pile of dingy old pallet wood in the garage. Or not….

Swiss Army Blanket Chair

Posted by James on January 31, 2012
Posted in: New Home. Tagged: hudson bay blankets, Living Room, Pendleton, Swiss Army Blanket, Vintage chair, Wool Blanket. 4 Comments

SOOOOO, A few days ago, whilst prowling the internets, I came across this picture….

Everybody knows that I am all about a Hudson Bay Blanket. My Pendleton obsession runs a close second to my glass ornament fetish. (Both border on the fringe of 12 step program help) This picture totally reminded me that we have a very similar chair that belonged to the previous owner in our living room. That’s the “formal” room at the front of the house where Harley sleeps all day – also the only room sans a television. It is possibly because of the dog smell and lack of TV viewing that we don’t really use this room for much.

I did install can lights a few weeks ago…so there’s something.

When we were at the house for the home inspection, I snapped this picture of a heap of crap the previous owner had in the garage.

See it there? Underneath what could have possibly once been a side table and some scrubbing pads? Pretty Groovy chair, right? Obviously has a cool 1950s vibe. The cushion covers are hainus in person…olive-green-pea-green-chartruse pollyester stripe……. Now the chair shape, on the other hand, I knew I could do some magic with that. Jamie was eying the lawn mover and weed eater to add on to the closing, I was scanning this chair and an orange light fixture that has yet to be used anywhere in the house. But I digress. We offered 200$ for crap in the garage…the previous owner excepted.

Here’s my second piece of chair inspiration…

Beautiful, isn’t it? Mid-century office mixed with Swiss Army Blanket….AAAAhhhhhhh (wheels are turning ) See where I’m headed with this post folks?

I posted this picture on my Pinterest page, and my dear friend Amy quickly informed me that this chair was from her shop, Red Barn Mercantile, a few years ago… Small world.

Hudson Bay blankets are about 200 dollars….Swiss Army Blankets, on the other hand, are much more reasonably priced. Mostly because there are so many reproductions available……if you aren’t “married” to the idea of 100% wool, that is. Since I plan on chopping this baby up, 100% wool isn’t that crucial…actually, a little poly in the mix will keep it all-the-more stain resistant.

Every online military surplus shop I tried was completely sold out of these blankets (in the 25$ range). Every time I placed an order, I would receive a follow up email refunding my purchase because they were no longer in stock. What the Hell? Of course, there are plenty available for 300 bones.

Maybe I could do some shopping in person, like people did in the olden days. We took a chance and hit up The Army Store in Garland Texas. I’ve driven by this shop hundreds of times, it’s 2 blocks from H. Depot, but Never been inside. Honestly, it looks a little, well, ummm, sketchy. I’m giving them props because I completely loved the place. There was inspiration hanging from the ceilings. Literally, HANGING FROM THE CEILINGS. Boiled wool peacoats, vintage foot lockers, silk parachutes, and just like I wanted …….”mostly” wool military blankets…

50% wool, and 50% something else…Not really sure what the “Something else” is, but who really cares? They were 22 bucks each. We bought 4. Navy with a reddish stripe, grey with a yellow stripe, and (big sigh of relief ) brown with a red stripe.

We bought 2 of the brown. These will be our new chair cushions. Too bad they are the only blankets with a little whip-stitch around the edge…because it will just be hacked off in the process.

They also have this crudely sewn cross…..

After much consideration, we decided to seam-rip the cross off, and focus on the red stripe as the detail of the cushions. Genuine Swiss Army blankets have a cross woven into the red stripe. This sad sad cross ain’t fool’n nobody.

I kinda love this project, because I have already done most of my part. The remainder is left up to my seamstress. ( under my supervision , natch ) I can sew a pretty decent pillow, and occasional Christmas stocking, but I feel much more confident having a professional line up the 2 stripes on 2 separate cushions.

I went through a similar dilemma a few years ago trying to decide if I wanted to pay a framer or just tape a cherished picture into an Ikea frame……I assure you, I am WAAAYYYYY happier with the professional framing job.

And I will be with this chair as well…..

We’ll keep ya’ll posted on the finished product.

I had to add this great photo of the 2 of them …..

James's avatarTHE CAVENDER DIARY

Jamie’s third show horse, when he was in his early 20’s, was a 2 year old paint named Olieos Partner.  He got him from Doug Horton at the Rocky Top Ranch, with the intent to travel with him in competitions across the country.  Jamie started to show him almost immediately and after several years of work , he reached number 10 in the nation in amateur overall paints. This custom portrait of Oileos Partner, or “Wilbur” as they called  him on the circuit,  was the prize for the Highest Point Amateur  in the state of  Texas in 1987.  After almost 25  years on his parent’s wall over the computer, he moved to our living room.  I Love it ….if I had seen this painting in an antique shop, I would have bought it immediately. ( honestly, I would have talked about buying it for weeks…then gone back after it was long gone )

I Ab-So-Lutely Love this picture of Jamie on Wilbur….pretty…

The Den “Before”

Posted by James on January 25, 2012
Posted in: New Home. Tagged: Can Lights, Den, Electrical Work. 6 Comments

Since everyone has seen the recent pictures of our den, there have been several requests to show before shots. I’m not sure “before” is really the right word. This room took us some time, it’s more like a 2 year evolution….

Here is what the room looked like when the previous owner was still here…

Not really bad…….but, not really good either…….This room had the most furniture in it. Actually, it was the only room in the whole house with pictures hanging on the walls.

After we placed a bid, and came back for the inspection, I snapped this picture of the fireplace.

What color is that? The fireplace backs up to the garage…and the unpainted brick in there is such a beautiful creamy color. And notice that it’s GLOSS. Everything in the house was painted gloss……Get this, even the ceilings. I apologize if you have glossy ceilings in your house, but there is still time to fix it. Look at the first picture in this post, you can see the windows reflected in the ceiling.

Here’s Jamie taking care of that wierd-ass color right now……First thing he did when we got the keys.

I focused on painting the ceiling…with actual freaking ceiling paint. It only comes in flat, in case you are wondering.

The walls we painted Martha Stewart “Fawn”. They would have been an RL color, but just one month before we moved, Home Depot stopped selling RL paint. Lubbock and Tyler were the only 2 cities in Texas that still sold it. Since both of those cities are several HOURS away from Dallas …….Martha won. (under breath) reluctantly.

I love the way the black fireplace plays off the khaki.  Actually makes it look thicker and more substantial.

I haven’t  mentioned that we were powerless the first 4 days of painting. TXU forgot to put in the work order to turn our power on. We had plans to do way more painting before our furniture arrived, but could only paint during daylight.

Speaking of furniture…..This looks so sparse.

So this is probably right after the movers delivered our stuff, because we were waiting on our Pottery Barn sisal with the black banding to come in ….and that ain’t it.

The entertainment center is an even sadder sight…I had forgotten about that giant blueray player.

We kept our books and artwork in the garage so the electricians could do this easier…

And eventually this …….

That’s right, install the cans……If you don’t have them…I Highly recommend them , they are sooooo choice. I’m not sure how I have lived all these years without them. When we’re finished, they will be in every room of the house ( only 4 more to go, and 2 of those are bathrooms  ). I’m getting amazingly adequately good at installing them myself. You can see an example of that handiwork here.

I had to add this picture of the coffee table being glued together with aquarium glue. We had to take it apart to move it here. It was really the last major project in this room …..

So there y’all have it  …..the evolution of our den. Check out the finished room here.

A Mention on Young House Love

Posted by James on January 22, 2012
Posted in: New Home. Tagged: Bloggers, Young House Love. Leave a comment
For those of you “not in the know”, Younghouselove.com is the blog that inspired us on our journey of blog-dom.  John and Sherry have created a huge following online with posts about tackling all the remodeling, decorating, and daily maintance of thier 50 year old Richmond Virginia home. These barely-30 something’s have about 1 million visitors a month…we have a drastically smaller number than that……(whispers to myself) “drastically smaller”.  Jamie was tracking our blog traffic the other night, and found it strange that several people were directed to our page from Young House Love. A little investigating showed us that Barbette had posted a link for Sherry to see our den and the inspiration we gave her with our Ikea bookcases turned console….Naturally, I commented, and Sherry back…

In the grand scheme of things…this is soooo small. It’s not like they did a feature article on us , a house crash, or even showed a single thumbnail…..And some day we will look back at this with embarrassment of how flattered I am.

But every little step counts…..and just a refference to us, on a popular site like they have……….. is

 H. U. G. E.

Here is the string of comments from the Young House Love post….

My comment was number 258 on that post….I can’t believe that Sherry , the mother of a toddler,  was sitting there at a quarter till 1 in the morning, with a kitchen full of newly laid penny tile waiting to be grouted…..took the time to send me a reply….

“Rock on. Love your style.”…… sigh

The Cavender Diary on “Color Outside the Lines”

Posted by James on January 20, 2012
Posted in: New Home. Tagged: Bloggers, Color Outside the Lines. Leave a comment

It’s a strange thing to start blogging about your home improvement….

It’s one thing to remodel a house …and a different animal altogether to document the process online. How many times have we both been elbow deep in primer, stain, fiberglass insulation, popcorn ceiling dust…and I yelp, “Stop…I need to take a picture”?  We are great with tiling, and paint, and power tools, and wiring…not so great with writing text, or editing pictures….or even figuring out how WordPress works……just last week, I learned how to link text to other pages….

We wonder if anyone even looks at this blog? Or just our Mothers?

Artie at Color Outside the Lines looked, he liked what he saw……and better yet, he thought he would share us with his followers. Since 2008, Artie’s brilliant blog has documented his ideas of unique inspiration, design and decoration.  His photographs are nothing short of inspiring. Please check out his article on us and the Cavender Diary. While you are there be sure to cruise the rest of his site…He has impeccable taste, after all, he picked us ……

Current Den

Posted by James on January 16, 2012
Posted in: House Tour, New Home. Tagged: Beacon Blanket, Chalkware Jesus, Den, House Tour, mantle, Patches, Pillows, Red Lockers, Restoration Hardware Chair. 27 Comments

It has come to our attention that we don’t have enough pictures of our interior….So I promise you , gentle reader, that we will do our best to provide a decent house tour in the next couple of months…Even if the rooms aren’t quite where we want them to be ….just yet.

This is the room we spend most of our time in, so it is most fitting that it is, by far, the most complete room in our house …..You can see what it looked like the first time we walked in here…….

Overall shot of the Den - Copy

Here’s a close up of the coffee table, usually that basket is full of remotes…….even though we both have Uverse remote apps on our  Ipads …go figure.

The coffee table I absolutely love ….it’s a huge glass cube. Just like to one Anthony Michael Hall was trapped under in “16 Candles”. If you’ve never seen that movie, you need to watch it right now … Seriously …. RIGHT NOW. This can wait.

Coffee Table Styled in the Cavender Den

Did you watch it? I KNOW!!!! GREAT movie , isn’t it???

So here’s a little more of the tour…..This is the view from the front hall.

Back of the Sofa in the Cavender Den

If you close in on the tool box, you can see that we use the drawers for “tear-sheets”….which is wayyyyyyyy easier than saving 300 magazines and catalogues….trust me.

The toolbox came from the garage of an abandoned house my brother was remodeling.

Top of the Nelson Bench in the Cavender Den

The pillows were all made by me, except the bandanna ones, with scraps from work projects.

I can sew an A-Ma-Zing straight line. The Letterman’s patches I have been collecting for years (and have quite a few more…Quite a few). The big L, from my personal high school Letterman’s jacket, is on a pillow on the other side of the sofa.

Pillows on the Sofa with Letterman's Patches in the Cavender Den

Here’s a great shot of the mantle….Notice how John Lennon is just slightly bigger than Jesus, ( just like he said he was ).

The belt buckle in the shadow box was a prize Jamie won showing horses, my favorite because of the red coral Texas.

The brick fireplace was half-ass painted some kind of semi-gloss olive-beige when we first moved in. Jamie primed and painted between all those bricks for 2 days…pretty sure that the black paint is Ralph Lauren Granite in flat.

The Mantle in the Cavender House Den

Speaking of chalkware Jesus, he was only 10 bucks at the Dolly Python, one of my favorite junk shops here in Dallas.

The altar candles were a house-warming gift…as was the “Red 5” votive.

Jesus and Alter Candles on the Cavender Mantle

Y’all might remember the plumbing pipe firewood holder from a few months ago…we’re still very much in love with it.

The vintage white pots hold firestarters and Pinon….AHHHH Pinon!

Here’s a shot of Jamie’s Restoration Hardware chair……Still as awesome as the day they delivered it.

The Woodrow Wilson patch I found on a Letterman’s jacket in the street while walking the dog one day……actually the jacket was pretty unwearable, but it had several great patches on it.

My brother the military expert tells me that the Guadalcanal patch is a replica of the one the first marines to step foot on the island were given. Although mine is bullion. That pillow was a Christmas gift from dear friends…pretty sure that I would grab it if the house were on fire.

After the Doberman, of course.

The horn bowl on the table next to it has some interesting things in it…….Some milagros, a clay and horsehair bear from New Mexico, a bundle of sage …. and, umm, a couple of dog skulls.

The far wall has the entertainment center, of course aimed at the sofa and kitchen.

One can never have enough books….they are just so decorative. “Don’t you think?”

I really hate TVs that dominate the room, but our’s seems pretty integrated into all the crap around it…. when it’s on, it’s almost like it’s just another picture on the wall.

Ikea Cabinets as the Entertainment Center in the Cavender Den

I’m a firm believer that there can never be enough pictures of James Dean in a house….and the rodeo poster is one of my all time favorite prints.

Ohh, and another crucifix, and another Rossary……as if a Catholic lives here.

Pictures and Books on Console

The Red lockers were an UN-freaking-believable dumpster dive find…Can you believe that someone, actually a Hermes store, would throw these away????

We I use them for storing out-of-season clothes….and the RRL boxes on top hold receipts and other boring paperwork….Remember the ceramic Doberman we found at a thrift store last summer? He fits just fine in that little nook.

And this concludes the tour of our den…..

Please keep all comments on a positive note.
