New Year, New Picture

Posted by James on December 31, 2012

That’s right,

We’ve been looking at this profile picture from our first anniversary in the Cavender house for way too long now.

Almost 2 years.

Time to update that baby.

Our friend Jimmie was over to join us for lunch and a quick grocery trip. After a minimal amount of styling (yeah, right!), we were on the front stoop with Jimmie once again behind the camera.

30 extremely similar shots later…….

Here’s the one we choose,

James, Jamie & Harley Dec 30 2012

We like it.

Newer/better camera this time.

Jamie has lost 50 pounds, I have gained a few, and Harley is still pretty easily distracted. (I think that there was a squirrel to our right)

We’re going to do our darndest to make it an annual thing,

Or whenever we look “put-together” enough to photograph…..

What to do with Christmas Cards….

Posted by James on December 29, 2012
Posted in: Christmas, New Home. Tagged: Christmas, Christmas Cards, Christmas Decorating, full length mirror, satin ribbon. 4 Comments

I know Christmas is over, but we still have things to share.

Have y’all ever struggled with how to display all those Christmas cards?

We have a quick solution.

There’s a full length mirror in our Living room (reflecting negative energy out the front door…it’s just good fung shui)

We dropped a piece of thick satin ribbon down the front with a thumb tack in the wall, and “clip” the new cards on with paper clips.

We just love how this looks with the cards overlapping….

White Christmas? In Dallas?

What began as rain on a chilly Christmas day, turned to thick snowflakes just after noon.

Still More Snow Coming Down on the Cavender house

There’s something about the crisp air and a blanket of white powder after a good snowfall that makes the Christmas lights even more magical.

Still just as stunning in the morning light of December 26th.

I’ve wanted to do this for years…and finially had the chance…..

Did that make you smile?

We smile every time we see this picture.

Christmas Lights Outside our House

Posted by James on December 27, 2012
Posted in: Christmas, New Home. Tagged: C7 Lights, Christmas, Christmas Decorating, Outside Christmas Lights, Vintage Tin Reflectors. 9 Comments

Here are your Cavender boys working like someone is actually paying us to light the outside of our house….

Yeah, that hard.

Jamie on the roof…..

Lining the little peaks and roof line in white bulbs.

James in the bushes….

Mixing b-lights with red ceramics bulbs and tin reflectors…..

We think that Christmas lights look a little more spectacular when you mix different sizes and styles.

We pick up these vintage punched tin reflectors whenever we find them cheap, usually about 50 cents each.

They fit right around a standard C7 light bulb…..and reflect like a little star.

See?

After a trip to the Dallas Farmer’s Market, Jamie came back with green/white kale and red Cyclamen. He mixed in some glass gazing balls that we found at the Wall-Mart last summer on clearance.

Kale, cyclamen and big gazing balls

We already posted about the lush garland that we framed the front door in….

But we also added a huge pile of pinecones in the black fishbowl pot with little twinkly B-lights inside the bowl.

You can read our tutorial for “beefing up” crappy craft store garland here.

Y’all should also remember that giant star we made with scrap cedar and pallet wood. We decided to “share” it with the neighbors….Aren’t they just sooooo lucky?

Giant Barnwood Star on the front of the House

For fun, we used the same light bulbs that they use on carnival rides.

Add all those details together and this is what it looks like at night…..

This is the first year that we erected the Christmas tree in the living room in front of the windows…..

and we like it……We like it a whole lot.

“How about that festive 6 foot star?” you might ask.

Red Star at Night

“Brilliant, It looks like it came right off of some old carnival ride.”

We couldn’t agree more.

We’ve Been Featured on Houzz

It’s too exciting to come up with a sparkling metaphor….

I keep trying to, and I just can’t…..So here’s the story.

A few weeks ago, we were contacted by an editor at Houzz who wanted to know if we would be interested in being Featured on Houzz.com ….

Wa-Wa-What?

If ?

we’d be interested????

She scoured our blog, we chatted on the phone, I took a few more pictures….and BAM!!!!!

What a Christmas gift.

Creative Resourcefullness feature on HOUZZ

We’re both just blown away by how much Becky at Houzz knows about us, and the process it took to make a “plain-jane” ranch house into our home.

“Creative Resourcefulness”…Yes, we are both of those things.

Please, check out the feature, it’s a pretty accurate summary of our last 3 years in the Cavender house.

Drape that Mantel like a Pro…..

Posted by James on December 24, 2012
Posted in: Christmas, New Home, Projects. Tagged: Christmas, Christmas Decorating, Christmas Garland, diy, home. 3 Comments

Our mantle seemed a little bare of Christmas Cheer this year. Y’all are pro’lly thinking, “How could they possibly cram anything else up there.” OOOhhh, just you wait.

Usually we just tuck pine into all the available crevices on the mantle, completely covering all the wood like a “pine blanket”, but this year we tried to make it slightly more “sophisticated”.

I started with about 12 feet of nylon rope….enought to gently drape over the top of the mantle and down about 4 feet on either side.

Then I just wired small bundles of branches to the rope with floral paddle wire…..

Wiring the Branch Pieces to the rope

If all the little branches are about the same length (10 to 12 inches) it only takes about 30 minutes to finish a 12 foot garland.

I know this is kind of a familiar theme with us….so just bear with us because we had A LOT of pine branches stacked up in the garage and we will use every last one.

How great does this look? Slithering across our mantle like an albino python hanging loosely over Brittany Spears’ shoulders…….Sort of.

Den Mantle with free garland and stockings

I used thumbtacks to keep it in place…

The stockings we made last year with Navajo fabric scraps and are held up with thumbtacks too.

Christmas Stockings on the Den Mantle

…there’s one for all 3 of us.

Gotta run, our house will be filled with good friends and even better cocktails in just a few hours….

Merry Christmas, Y’all!

Crystal Frost Spray

Posted by James on December 23, 2012
Posted in: Christmas, New Home, Projects. Tagged: Christmas, Christmas Decorating, Crystal Frost Spray on Hurricane, Ice Crystal Spray. 7 Comments

OK, Have you people tried this stuff?

CHASE PRODUCTS CO #499-0542 5OZ Santa Ice Crystals

Ice crystal spray turns any glass surface into a temporary work of frozen art. Amazing-ness in a spray can, (If you know how to use it).

Don’t worry, we’re going to show you how right now.

Amazon sells it for 2$ a can. That’s our “Magic Number” for how much a craft should cost. You can buy it here.

Start with a clean glass surface. VERY clean. No fingerprints. No Oil. No nothing.

It works well on all glass items, Mirrors, vases, …..We use ours on Hurricanes. We’ve had this old blown glass hurricane since the Clinton Administration, and it has held up well. I know the trend is more modern stream-lined shapes, but the curves in this kind of piece will make it look more like it was carved from ice……I promise. Just you wait and see.

If you’re positive that your hurricane is clean and dry, lay out a drop cloth or towel so your overspray doesn’t “gunk-up” anything around you. It will leave a sticky film.

Start spraying about 8 – 10 inches away from your piece and move your arm in a sweeping motion. Keep moving, and leave a nice even layer. I like to coat the outside AND the inside of my hurricane.

Spraying the Crystal Frost on a Hurricane

To speed up the drying process I fan the whole thing with a piece of cardboard. If it’s dripping anywhere quickly blow on the drips before it dries. This will keep them from staying in “drip” form.

If they do dry that way, use a wet sponge to wipe away the drips and spritz a new coat of frost spray.

As the piece begins to air dry, the tiny little crystals form in the wet spray.

Drying Crystal Frost

A lot of spray will mean a heavily iced look, and a light dusting of spray will mean just a small smattering of ice. Experiment, it was only 2 dollars.

Try this stuff around the edges of a mirror above the mantel, or on a glass vase filled with pine and red roses.

But of course, our absolute favorite way to use it is with candle light.

See?

Hurrican with Crystal Frost Spray in Living Room

Wilbur, Francis, Roses and Frosted Hurricane

When you’re ready to go back to clear glass, it just washes off with warm, soapy water.

OK, we like this frost spray so much we thought we’d try it on some smaller votives too.

…and hang them in branches…it’s a little hard to explain, but much easier to show….

Oil Jar full of Branches, Vintage Ornaments, and Votives

See them there hanging with even more vintage ornaments? (Bet ya didn’t think we add any left after making that giant wreath now, did ya?)

Closu-Up of Arangement on Kitchen Island

These little hanging votives came from a craft store years ago……they are just the right size to hang from branches in a big vase.

Small Hanging Votive with Crystal Frost

And are even more magical when frosty and candle-lit.

So, what are y’all waiting for? Go try some crystal frost spray.

Christmas Cards for 2012

Posted by James on December 21, 2012
Posted in: Christmas, New Home, Projects. Tagged: Christmas, Embossing Powder, Homemade Christmas Cards, Paper Source Dallas, Quickie Glue Pen. 12 Comments

I have been making my own Christmas cards for as long as I can remember. Because I can rarely find any pre-made ones with the right ….”personality”.

It certainly isn’t cheaper to make them than buy. Not by a longshot. But they are much more personal.

Every card starts with an inspiration, usually a vintage picture we found at a junk shop.

But, this year inspiration came to us from an image on Pinterest.

This one:

Pretty stunning, isn’t it? I’m in love with the grainy timelessness of it.

A Black/White photo will look like holiday cheer adhered on a red card. So red cards is where we started.

We are lucky to have a Paper Source in Dallas, and we headed there for red cards and white envelopes.

It was at Paper Source that we were given a couple of product demonstrations that showed us how to take our humble cards to the next level. We don’t consider ourselves to be “crafters”…..so this stuff was all new to us.

Allow us to share the process.

To begin, Jamie stamped “Happy Holidays” inside our cards with a rubber stamp and “Frost White” embossing ink. (Not all of our friends are Christians, so “Happy Holidays” is the best greeting)

Then a sprinkle with embossing powder.

He taped the excess powder off into the “No Spill Tray Mate “. We have always shaken off excess glitter into a paper plate and then bent the plate in half to “funnel” the surplus back into the jar.

Apparently, this is how they crafted durring the middle-ages.

This thing is the perfect size to compile all that extra embossing powder and pour it right back where it belongs with the built-in funnel on the bottom.

He then “set” the embossing powder with a heat gun. This makes the powder bake onto the stamp. Very professional looking.

Can’t use a hair dryer because it would just blow all the powder away. (We don’t own a hairdryer anyway, neither of us has that much hair)

Here are all the finished stamped cards drying and waiting for Jamie to add the photos to the front.

Speaking of photos.

Jamie put our jpeg picture on a zip drive and used the photo machine at the drug store on the corner. Printed them on matt photo paper. (28 cents each)

We tried a couple different sizes of photos. 5X7 was beautiful image, but the exact size of our cards. We definitely want to show some of that holiday red color. The 4X6 with the small white border was printing slightly off-center. Skinny little white line on top, thick ones on the other 3 sides. In contrast, the 4X6 without a white border seemed too flat.

The solution turned out to be a 4 1/2 X 6 1/4 white card in-between our beautiful image and the red folded card. Like so….

We just had to tape all three together with a crafting tape runner.

I realize that with the math, the sides with have 1/8 of an inch more of white card showing than the top/bottom. I think we’re OK with this. The thought of cutting 1/4 inch off of 80 white cards perfectly seems a little dreadful at this point in the project.

Now to add a little sparkle with some craft glue and fine glitter where the snow flakes are in the picture.

Adding a Few Little Glue Dots

Jamie Glittering Christmas Cards

like so…..

Glitter on the New Cards

Almost finished.

The most important part is the stamp on the back….

Handmade by James & Jamie Stamp from Paper Source

The good folks at Paper Source make pre-inked stamps to meet anyone’s needs….like ours. We just had to pick a design, customize it, and wait about 6 days.

Finished…now to get them in the mail.
