Paint it Black

Been thinking about black walls lately.

Think they are “dreary”?

Almost……sexy?

Right?

Instead of being gloomy and cave-like, I think they make everything in front of them “POP”.

Especially elements that we love – stag horn ferns, bus rolls, wood, leather, Atari logos, and cowboy photos.

At first, we were hesitant to paint the fireplace in our den black…….but we loved it instantly.

Not sure if we have a place in the Cavender house for black walls….

….but we might some day. And I’m not ruling them out just yet.

Flowers and Conversation Hearts

Posted by James on February 10, 2013
Posted in: New Home, Projects. Tagged: conversation candy, Conversation Hearts, roses and tulips, Valentine's Flowers. 17 Comments

Conversation candy hearts were first invented in 1901.

They taste terrible, you know they do, somewhere between stale candy and chalk.

But they are amazingly sentimental, and instantly conjure images of 2nd grade valentines and the sweet hearts who gave them. “CALL ME”

Conversation Hearts

Here’s a charming way to use them without having to “eat” them.

After a morning trip to the grocery store I came back with a bag of candy hearts and a handful of fresh flowers. Some pink hydrangea, a dozen creamy ruffled roses with pink centers (Esperance), and a bundle of shocking pink tulips.

These are just flowers from a “regular Joe” grocery store, not even a specialty grocer like Whole Foods or Central Market. When you buy flowers there just make sure everything is tight and firm to the touch. Roses and tulips may look small, but they will more than double in size as they absorb water.

Hydrangeas, Roses, and Tulips

Start with 2 vases, I love the clean lines of cylinders and use them for everything from hurricanes to snack bowls…… So we have several sizes around the Cavender house.

I layer a smaller vase inside a slightly larger one. It’s not a big deal that the inner vase is a little taller because the flowers will hang over this distance.

Small Vase inside the Larger Vase

True Cavender fans will remember when we used a big cylinder vase (actually a salad bowl) to make a similar cranberry and rose arrangement for Christmas a few years ago.

Then fill the space between the 2 vases with conversation hearts.

Fill the Space Between 2 Vases with Conversation Hearts

Fill the center vase with water (carefull not to splash water on the candy hearts or they will dissolve into a big ‘ol mess) and pink hydrangea.

BTW, these hydrangea did not start life pink, they were white hydrangea set in a bucket of red dye for a few hours by the wholesaler. Now they are blushing.

Pink Hydrangea added to Vases

I then work in the other flowers, like the roses. I cut them to about 8 inch lengths and stripped off all their leaves. The leaves will just rot in the water.

Cream and Pink Ruffled Roses

The hydrangea are a great base for arrangements because they are dense enough to hold all the other flowers in place. I want my finished arrangement to make a nice round dome shape…the flowers should “hug” each other.

Hydrangea with Roses Added

Always do the same flowers in clumps instead of “dotting” them in. They makes more of an impact in groups.

The tulips are next, making sure to cut each one at an angle for better water absorption. Tulips will continue to grow in water…..so it’s better to cut them a little short.

Cutting Tulips at an Angle

Look how charming this is…..

If someone I knew were having a Valentine’s day wedding, this would be their centerpieces.

"Conversation Hearts" Valentine's Arangement

Close Up of Valentine's Arangement

"Conversation Hearts"Valentine's Arangement

This took about 20 minutes for me to make including stopping to pose for Jamie’s pictures.

Even with Valentine’s-Week-Grocery-Store-Prices it cost a fraction of what a florist would charge.

Sure, I have access to wholesale flowers. But we want to present arrangements that anyone can make. Not just professional florists.

Try this for yourselves….. use Red Hots, or Mike And Ikes, or Hot Tamales, or peppermints……any hard candy really.

We would LOVE to see pictures!!!!

“Beautiful Clutter” ???

Posted by James on February 8, 2013
Posted in: New Home. Tagged: Houzz. 16 Comments

Last week we had the good fortune to have a picture of our den featured in an article on the HOUZZ site.

The article was titled, “Beautiful Clutter? These 13 Rooms Say Go for It”

“Gasp”…..I didn’t know that we had “clutter”…..I just thought we had a large amount of “cool-ass stuff”.

Apparently, the post set off quite a debate about cleanliness vs. clutter.

Check it out.

Beautiful Clutter? These 13 Rooms Say Go for It

Don’t forget to read the comments…they get a little “snippy”…so much so, that the HOUZZ editors have erased a few of them from the post.

But y’all will get the gist.

“Smurfing” China

Posted by James on February 7, 2013
Posted in: New Home. Tagged: Ralph Lauren Cafe Stripe, Wedgwood. 16 Comments

Are y’all familiar with the term “Smurfing”.

Since laws were passed in 2005 to prohibit people from buying large quantities of pseudoephedrine at one time, crystal meth manufacturers have found ways around this by “smurfing” from one store to another buying just under the 2 package legal limit at each store until they have enough pseudoephedrine to make crystal meth. I assume it’s derived from the Smurfs gathering berries – or nuts, or whatever the Hell Smurfs eat – in small quantities in the magical woods around their mushroom village.

When I was in my very early 20’s, Ralph Lauren launched a line of table top china made by Wedgwood.

“Wait a minute,” you’re thinking, “What does that have to do with meth?” Just keep reading.

My favorite china pattern was the “Cafe Stripe”. It reminded me of exactly that, a small town diner. Bone white with a “denim seam” band of blue encircling the rim of each piece.

Here’s a page from the 1990 Ralph Lauren china catalog that I’ve hoared saved all these years.

Ralph Lauren China Add
Even with my department store employee discount and pathetic paycheck (pretty sure I was living on $4.25 an hour) it was still hopelessly out of my price range to buy a complete set of dishes. But I knew that I could……. if I bought one piece at a time.

The first piece I bought? A teacup. A $20 teacup, $18 with the employee discount.

Every 2 weeks on payday, I’d march down to the fine china department and add a piece to my collection; a sugar bowl, a bread plate, a saucer. Just one at a time.

Because with enough patience and perseverance, like the Smurfs ……….or crystal meth addicts, I knew I would eventually have all that I needed.

There was a moment of panic when they discontinued the lines and I still needed a teapot – the most expensive piece – eventually, my dear friend Lenny found one at a clearance center in Arlington. finished,

Ralph Lauren Cafe Stripe China

Ralph Lauren Cafe Stripe Teapot

Ralph Lauren Cafe Stripe Plates

Ralph Lauren Cafe Stripe Sugar Bowl

Ralph Lauren Cafe Stripe Teacup

I haven’t used any of it almost 20 years. I started collecting so many other potteries since then. (Fiesta, Bauer, Russel Wright) The same way, one piece – or 2, or 3 – at a time. But still, in small quantities.

Smurfing

Through the years, I’ve accumulated all my other collections this way too. (Mercury Glass Christmas Ornaments, Linen Postcards, Western Buckles, Fiestaware, Hawaiian Shirts, Zuni Fetishes…… everything really.)

I still have all of my cafe stripe in a box in the garage. There isn’t room for it in the kitchen cabinets.

Now, I think It’s time to move on ………and send it to a new home.

I know after that amazing story of a young man with a dream of owning china, y’all may think it’s a little sad to see it go to a new home.

But, I’m ready. I really am.

George Nelson Saucer Lamp

Posted by James on February 3, 2013
Posted in: Did Ya Know?, New Home. Tagged: George Nelson Saucer Lamp, Modernica Lamps. 15 Comments

The George Nelson Saucer lamp, the most iconic lamps in the history of modern design, is part of the Nelson Bubble lamp series designed by George Nelson in 1947. Their pleasing shapes, based on Chinese paper lanterns, are fashioned in sturdy, light-weight steel with a special woven white polymer plastic over the top.  With about a dozen other shapes to choose from, Nelson Bubble lamps have maintained the same level of popularity for almost 70 years.

George Nelson Lamps

I’m wild about the U.F.O. shape.

Almost a “Close Encounter of a Ceiling Kind”. (laughs to self)

They weren’t created just for sterile environments. They should be mixed into a room.

Here are a few interiors that I think “mix in” these lamps just perfectly.

Looks just as natural hanging over a farmhouse table as it does mixed with kitschy 1950’s furniture. Even floating over a Hudson Bay blanket, which is more our style.

That’s what I love so much about these things. There is more than just a “Mid-Century” coolness vibe too. A little campy and Sleek Modern at the same time.

So why the big TOO-DO about Nelson Saucer Lamps?

Because I got one!!!! Happy Birthday to me. (yeah, that was a few months ago – just now posting about it  – so sue me)

Picked up a small one for our guest room. After a little deliberation, we decided that we don’t need a ceiling fan in there. In Texas, all the bedrooms have ceiling fans. Our guests might miss it….but what the heck? We won’t. It’s nice to have one unused jewel-box of a room.

Here’s what’s hanging in there now….

Pretty uneventful, Right? You should have seen the monstrosity that was there when we moved in. At least now, all the fans in the bedrooms match.

We have a theory that if your ceiling is white, the fan should be too.

The box had this awesome seal across the top.

It was honestly a little hard to cut through it. Not literally, figuratively. But at the same time, it felt like opening a present.

If you have ever wired a light fixture then you know how easy it really is. I’m not going to bore anyone with the details…….and just show the spectacular results.

Guest Room with Nelson Saucer Lamp

Like a little “Mid-Century” space ship hovering over the bed.

Nelson Saucer Pendant

I was worried that the light bulb would be visible from every angle, but you really have to stand right under it and look up to see it.

Like so……

View of the Center of the Nelson Saucer Pendant

Sidenote: When our dear friend, and more than occasional houseguest, Ivan saw the box,

he squealed with delight, ” I hope that’s going in the guest room !“.

I’m guessing that he doesn’t miss the ceiling fan either……

Ashley & Gus & Lili & Rock & Roses

Posted by James on February 2, 2013
Posted in: New Home. Tagged: Baby Shower Crafts, Fatherhood, Motherhood, Parenthood, Rock & Roses Bowtique. 1 Comment

Ashley and I have worked together for about 6 years now.

In those 6 years, we’ve traveled together across the state and across the country. I think that I might possibly spend more time with her than I do with Jamie. We eat lunch together almost every day, and usually just the 2 of us. Because it’s our 60 minutes away from work, we have an unspoken rule that we don’t really talk much “work talk” over lunch. Instead, we talk about our families, books we’re each reading, High School triumphs (we both grew up in small Texas towns), movies we love, our dogs, and (tounge-in-cheek here) how lucky our spouses are to have us. I’ve only met her husband Gus a handful of times, but I feel like we’re old friends.

Even though I sometimes have an X-Men-like talent for saying the wrong thing at exactly the wrong time, she always looks past this. She is incredibly dear to me.

For the past year or so, our lunch conversations have focused more and more on their plans for children.

After what anyone would consider an unusual amount of heartache, waiting, stress, and even more waiting; I’m so happy to report that they became parents this past week. They welcomed little Liliana June into their lives.

I know without a doubt that they will be amazing parents. Ashley’s sensible nature is balanced perfectly with Gus’s impulsive one.  While Ashley sets her mind on strict budgeting, Gus’s solution is to bring home live chickens so they never have to buy eggs again.

Ladies and Gentlemen, The Yin/Yang of parenting.

As their daughter will soon learn, If one of her parents says, “NO”…..chances are pretty good that the other will say, “Yes”.

We couldn’t be happier for them.

We wanted to get them something as special as they are. Jamie has a dear friend Liz who’s 2 daughters, Maddie and Sofia – 10 and 8 respectively, started their own company making bows.

Rock & Roses Bowtique Girls

Sofia, who plans to be a fashion designer when she grows up, created Rock & Roses Bowtique when she was just 7 years old. She wanted to wear bows that were more unique than the ones she saw in stores. She believed that she could create a better product for a lower price; something with a “fashionista” twist. She and her sister started selling their hand-made bows at school and in Girl Scouts. They were an instant hit, and the girl’s business was born. They love to sell their bows at different places and to tell people how young they were when they began their fashion business.

Jamie sent Liz an email asking if the girls would be interested in making us an assortment for a baby girl….

This is what arrived….

Some brights….

Brights from the Rock & Roses Girls

Some pastels and a cream knit cap…

Pastels from the Rock & Roses Girls

They even do “designer” labels….

Baby Dior from the Rock & Roses Girls

For formal baby occasions, some chocolate and black…..

Chocolate and Black from the Rock & Roses Girls

All the bows and flowers are on clips and can be layered. When Lili is older and has hair, she can use the bows without the stretchy bands.

We just knew that these sweet little girls were the perfect designers for our baby gift for little Lili.

Need some bows? I’ll bet you know someone who would love a couple.

You can reach these very talented girls on their Facebook page at Rock & Roses Bowtique (be sure to “Like” them) or send them an email rockandrosesbowtique@yahoo.com

Congratulations to Ashley and Gus, we are so happy for you.

The Homies 2013

Posted by James on February 1, 2013
Posted in: New Home. Tagged: Apartment Therapy, Homies. 8 Comments

homies.jpg

Apartment Therapy is the site that inspired us to start our little blog.

Their wise editors also choose to feature our humble kitchen remodel last summer.

Every year Apartment Therapy host a “popularity contest” of sorts for home/design/family/food blogs. Yepp, all of those.

We are nominated in 2 different categories.

• Best Home Design & Inspiration Blog
• Best Home Projects & DIY Blog

Pretty darn cool.

For sheer humility, I should add that a couple hundred other blogs were nominated too. Last time I checked, which is about every 20 minutes, we only had a handful of votes.

This is NOT about wining anything. (a certain proverb about a snowball and a place of eternal damnation comes to mind)

This IS about getting noticed, and getting noticed by people who wouldn’t normally know where to find us.

“Greetings to you, new reader…Have a look around. We just might inspire you ….or make you cringe at our lack of taste. We like taxidermy, “organized” clutter, pillows, and American flags just thumbtacked to the wall. If those facts haven’t scared you away yet, we’re glad that you’re here.”

And too all of y’all who have been following us for a while now…….Check out the Apartment Therapy site….and, ahhhhh

“VOTE FOR US“

Please visit some of the other blogs listed there.  These bloggers, much like ourselves, pour their souls into something that consumes all available free time, just for the sake of sharing and expressing….

Go discover them. See what they do. Get inspired……

Oh yeah, and vote for us.

Both categories….

Buttercup Finds Her Horns

Posted by James on January 28, 2013
Posted in: New Home. Tagged: Ft Worth Stock Show, Longhorns. 16 Comments

Our dear, sweet “Buttercup” has been living in our garage for about a year now.

She just kind of hangs out by the Coke machine.  BAAAA Dump Dump PING!

When my friend Lenny sent me a text that he had found something at the Disabled American Veteran’s thrift store that I absolutely had to have……I was curious. He lives in Lubbock where odd-ball things are somehow more likely to turn up in thrift stores. He usually knows my style, and when he sent me a picture of a severed cow head…I knew that he was right.

Those long lashes, and an oddly placed stringy wig. One ear barely hanging on and a split upper lip.

I knew that she needed me as much as I needed her.

I thought that she might be a Longhorn – but she was “NO-horn”.

Because she had been stripped of her horns. The indignity.

Longhorn Over Coke Machine

We have been searching for a reasonably priced new set since we got her.

Last week at the Forth Worth Stock Show…..I found my both.

(Sound of angels playing trumpets)

Longhorn Nirvana.

Wall of Longhorn Horns at the Ft Worth Stock Show

Sure the mounted sets were expensive, and y’all know how cheap I am. But then I saw my box.

“Assorted Polished Horns 15$ each”

Maybe. Just maybe there was a set.

…and Boom!

Set of Longhorns at the Stock Show

What do ya think? Looks like a set to me.

Sold.

Animal horns are made from the same keratin proteins that human finger/toe nails are made up of. So the same way a person’s nails are softer after a hot shower, horns are also slightly more pliable.

Didn’t expect a little biology/anatomy lesson to be casually slipped in there? Did ya?

After a warm soak, I slid them over the wooden “Frankenstein’s Monster” nubs on her temples.

Then I reused the tiny little screws, I had removed from the nubs earlier, right through the horn to hold them in place. I drilled pilot holes first (yes, they are that soft) carefull not to tighten too much and crack the horn.

Tiny Little Screw on Underside of Horns

I put the screws as close to her hair-line as I could, and covered them with white nail polish…….that we, just, (clears throat), happened to have around the house.

What do ya think?

IClose-up of Butercup In her new Horns

Butercup and her new horns

We think that she looks tons more dignified now.

and maybe…smiling, just a little bit.

Yes, she is still a severed cow head with a split lip,

but she is darn lucky to have us.

We Found Edward Curtis!

Posted by James on January 26, 2013
Posted in: Did Ya Know?, New Home. Tagged: Edward Curtis, edward sheriff curtis, Wikimedia Commons. 4 Comments

There is power in the masses.

Just last night we posted about this self-portrait of the photographer Edward Curtis.

Edward S. Curtis self portrait 1899

He was 30 when he took this self-portrait. This dude knew how to grow some righteous facial hair. I’m infatuated with his (possibly cashmere?) turtle neck and canvas field coat with the cordoroy collar. Sure, they are both easy pieces to grab from J-Crew now…..but in his day? And who would wear such a thing for a formal photograph? And that felt “lady’s?” hat with the leather band…just too cool.

We wrote about him, and his image of Chief Sitting Bull from our den, last year.

Even though we were born 100 years apart, I’ve always had a connection to this dude …. hopefully just the passion …. not the extreme poverty or insanity.

One Kings Lane was selling this portrait from the New Normal set.

The New Normal Bed Still with Curtis Photo

And we missed the sale.

Enter Tara – a fan of our site, quickly becoming a dear friend, and brilliant photographer herself.

She sent me to Wikimedia Commons a free file-share community for public domain and freely licensed educational media content.

…and there he was, just sitting there for anyone to use. Go get one for yourself – Edward S Curtis

I just have to upload the file, print it on something (Tara suggests Ilford pearl paper), and then buy another $8 frame at Ikea.

Who am I kidding? This could be a job for a professional framer.

“The New Normal” Set for Sale

Posted by James on January 25, 2013
Posted in: New Home. Tagged: Bauer Pottery, Edward Curtis, Ryan Murphy, The New Normal. 8 Comments

OK, It’s Late, I’ll admit that. But it’s been a Hell of a week and I just heard about this stuff today.

One Kings Lane recently featured a flash sale of items from the set of, and inspired by, the show “The New Normal”. Ryan Murphy (the creator of Glee) based this show loosely on his own life – He and his real life partner recently became parents via surrogate. The fictitious couple, Bryan and David, live in an A-Maz-Ing Spanish Colonial house also based loosely on Murphy’s own home, that we featured back in November. Murphy’s house used to be owned by Diane Keaton, and her design influence permeates the show sets. Got all that? Good.

Wanna buy a piece of the show? Well, your almost too late, the sale ends Saturday the 26th. But here are a few alternatives if you missed it like we did.

The New Normal Dinner Still

My dear friend Ellet, was telling me about this $320 star from the sale….

Wood and Metal Marque Star

It’s cute, but I think we can make one just like it…..or did we already? Barn Wood Star

The TV house is filled to the brim with Bauer pottery. Like this oil jar.

Orange Bauer Oil Jar

You can buy all the Bauer pottery you could ever want on the Bauer Pottery site.

We are pretty attracted to this large Steel Cut Buffalo as well.

Iron Buffalo

I’m thinking about cutting one out of plywood with a jig saw.

This old Navajo Indian sign looks like something that we could replicate pretty easily too. Certainly for Less than $1,100….Sheeeessh

El Navajo Gift Shop Sign

Y’all should already know about our fascination for Vintage Marque Letters like this pair

Vinatge C & A Letters

You can buy new ones just like these at Urban Outfitters that actually light up.

And how about these cowboy book ends? How cool are they? Pretty cool…..That’s right.

Vintage Cowboy Book Ends

We found some new ones at this site. Not exactly the same, but close enough. They just need a little spritz with some spray paint.

This old deco clock reminds me of the one Diane Keaton had on her desk.

Vintage Deco Clock

In love completely with this vintage North Dakota road sign.

North Dakota Road Sign

I did a quick search on eBay and several came up. I think we might have to own one of these one day.

Our very favorite thing from the sale? That’s easy……the self-portrait of Edward Curtis that hangs next to the master bed on the show.

Edward Curtis Self Portrait

I point it out for Jamie to see every time we watch. There it is, right there next to the bed. See?

The New Normal Bed Still with Curtis Photo

Edward Curtis is the photographer who took the picture of the native American in our den.

With out a doubt, it’s the one thing I would have bought. I’m still searching for one online…HHHHmmmm

Looks like we all missed the sale….

Even if we can’t buy the pieces from the actual show…..

….we can do our best to copy the style.

Believe you me, I’ll be studying the sets on that show like a hawk from now on.
