What to Plant

Posted by James on April 17, 2013
Posted in: New Home. Tagged: Agave, cactus, flower beds, Front Yard. 7 Comments

What to plant in that completely naked flower bed is the question right now.

We agree on low maintenance and the dreadful Texas summers means drought/heat tolerant as well.

Here are a few ideas that we have for the front flower beds.

We’ve had great success with these 3 plants….

Red Yucca

False Red Yucca

Blue Desert Sage

Blue Desert Sage

and Creeping Rosemary

Creeping Rosemary

All three flower nicely and the best part is that we couldn’t kill them if we tried.

We’ve always wanted some cactus in our yard.

Like Bunny Ear Cactus with the fuzzy paddles

Bunny Ear Cactus

Blue Agave (I wouldn’t want to fall on that thing shirtless)

Agave Winterhart

Paddle Cactus (We see these growing wild in fields in Austin and San Antonio). But I was advised that the needleless plants are the ones to choose.

PaddleCactus

and Barrel Cactus

Barrel Cactus

I’m not a huge fan of Yuccas, but they are stunning when they are flowering.

Yucca in Full Bloom

Kangaroo’s Paw is a pretty easy grower too……look at all that color. They might burn up in the summer so we’ll try planting them under the Mountain Laurel tree.

Kangaroo's Paw

Bottle Brush plants grow in desert areas, are evergreens, and attract hummingbirds. All plusses.

Bottle Brush Cluster

We thought we’d throw in some Mexican Feather grass too. It gives the bed some movement when it sways in the wind.

Mexican Feather Grass

These are our thoughts for possible plants.

Hopefully they will all thrive, but our plan is to experiment with a few of each and see what lives and what, “clears throat”, doesn’t.

Stay Tuned….

Welcome to the World Baby Girl

Posted by James on April 15, 2013
Posted in: New Home. Tagged: Baby Shower, ivan walton, lemonade mix. 17 Comments

Madeleine Maurine Peck joined our world this past weekend.

Hi Madeleine, you don’t really know me yet….but I’m going to be your best friend.

I’m going to call you Madie, …or possibly “Angel Pie”, I haven’t decided just yet.

Your Daddy and I were talking about how one day you will be able to read this blog…..so I thought I’d write this post just for you.

……after all, It is all about you.

About a month before you were born your Aunt Leslie, your Gunkle Jamie and I threw your Mommy and Daddy a baby shower so they would be prepared for your arrival.

Invite for The Peck's Baby Shower

Here you are with your Mommy and Daddy.

Kylie & Gert & baby Maddie Still Inside

Don’t see yourself.

Look closely.

No, your Mommy isn’t stealing a watermelon under that top…..That’s you inside your Mommy’s belly! Yes it is. (You’ll have to ask your parents for the exact details of just how you got in there, ………it’s kinda gross)

Gunkle Jamie was in charge of staking pink and chocolate balloons in front of the house.

Balloons are the universal sign for “Party’s Over Here”!

Party Over Here, Balloons Outside the House

Your Guncle Ivan did all the flowers for your shower.

Take a look at the “gravity defying pink parade float” he constructed on the buffet table. We had to move the chandelier up just so it would fit.

Yes, we did.

Buffet Table with Ivan's Parade Float Centerpiece

He’s been doing flowers for years, for some of the very best families in Dallas. You were pretty lucky that he was available with his busy, busy schedule.

Ivan's Floral Centerpiece on the Buffet Table

Wanna see more of his work? Check out his webpage Ivan Walton Designs .

To “Jazz Up” the chocolate tablecloth we wove a few lengths of gross-grain and satin ribbon across the top. This is a pretty easy thing to do, and it makes quite a pretty impact.

Don’t ya think?

Woven Ribbons as a Table Runner

My brother Ben tended the bar serving mimosas (for all the grown-ups) and San Pellegrino (your Mommy’s fancy water).

But the drink of choice for the afternoon was fizzy pink lemonade….

Ben with Pink Lemonaid

It’s pretty easy to make if you wanna try some for yourself. Get your Mom to help you mix powdered pink lemonade mix with Cherry flavored sparkling water…carefull not to use too much mix, it can be sweet. If it is, just cut, I mean dilute it with more water.

Just look at that pile of presents.

Baby Shower Presents

Can you tell which present is from your Gunkles? I’ll give you a hint…….there’s a rubber duckie in an Indian headdress on top.

That’s the one! I knew you’d find it.

Here’s another clever idea to steal: a “Who Gave Us That” book.

"Who Gave Us That" Book for a Baby Shower

Your Gunkle Jamie printed the graphic on paper and then glued it to the front of a small canvas journal.

Your Aunt Leslie kept a very detailed list of who gave exactly what at your shower so your Mommy could send “Thanks You” notes.

Your Mommy was raised well.

…….. and she’s a little bit “anal-retentive”. (That’s a Big word, I know)

Leslie Keeping Detailed "Who Gave US That" notes

We made homemade truffles for everybody as party favors……

They are so easy to make. You Need:

  • 9 ounces bittersweet chocolate (about 1.5 cups chopped)
  • 2/3 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Slowly melt the chocolate into the cream over a double boiler (that’s a mixing bowl set over a saucepan of boiling water). When everything is melted, remover from heat and stir in the vanilla. Let the whole mixture cool for a few hours in the refrigerator, then roll into ball shapes with your hands and then in cocoa powder to coat them.

Homemade Truffles rolled in Cocoa Powder

Told ya they were easy.

We boxed them up in Chinese take-out boxes as a nod to your Mommy’s Asian heritage….. The brown polka-dots are a clue to what lies inside.

Homemade Truffles in Take Out Boxes

Here you are with your Mommy and Daddy …….and your Gunkle James and Gunkle Jamie.

Kylie, Gert, James and Jamie at Maddie's Shower

We were waiting for you to kick us, but you must have been sleeping at the time. Hard to believe that you could sleep with all that excitement around you.

And that is the party we threw for you……..before you were even here.

But now you are here, and we couldn’t be happier.

“Angel Pie”,

And Baby Makes 5

Posted by James on April 13, 2013
Posted in: New Home. Tagged: baby, Motherhood. 32 Comments

When I was 23 I worked in the Men’s Sportswear department at Macy’s.

It was another time back then, when sales people actually helped customers select clothes.

There were about 12 of us selling Izod shirts, khaki chinos, and valour sweat suits to anyone who would walk into the store. I was on 3% commission and desperate to afford my rent……..and/or cute sweaters and Calvin Klein fragrances. That motivation made me a pretty aggressive salesman back then and all the others knew to stay out of my way when I was selling.

All the others except for Kylie.

Kylie was in a Work/Study program for her High School – It really didn’t matter what, or how much, she sold; because she made the same measly hourly wage regardless…… she was only there to earn an “A”.

This was during her “Robert Smith inspired – Goth Stage” and she wore nothing but black layered clothing and patent leather “dominatrix” boots that laced way above her knees and somehow made her appear even shorter than her 5′ frame already did. The only color we ever saw her wear was the meticulously selected shade of “Blood Red” lipstick on her pale, pale face.

Kylie was only 15 when the HR department assigned her to Men’s Sportswear to help with floor coverage. To me, “Floor Coverage” meant she was only there to direct customers to the restrooms, or a fitting room, or, most importantly here, a commissioned salesperson – like myself – to ring their purchases.

But Kylie didn’t quite see it that way. Every time I turned my back, that little B#%$& was ringing-up another big sale.

What the Hell?

That little girl bugged me to no end. Yet, she saw me (who was SOOOOOO old to her) as no competition what-so-ever……Basically, because I wasn’t.

Then, one day she did something totally unexpected for a Mortal Enemy to do….she gave me a Christmas card, with a photograph of a ghost town cemetery on it (seriously, a cemetery, on a Christmas card)……and in the envelope, a tiny little sand dollar – because, she thought I’d like it.

Nail. On. The. Head.

Flash forward through 20 plus years, several jobs, a couple relationships, some bad decisions, and a few good ones too.

Friends ever since.

James and Kylie 1996

BTW, I still have the card and the sand dollar.
But, of course I do,

For all those unsuspecting straight guys out there, if your girlfriend has that special gay …..”You get the gay too”. It’s a packaged deal…and there’s no debate…….so just accept it.

Every girl needs a gay man in her life just to escort her to her X’s wedding and make fun of the bride’s terrible taste, and to gently remind her that she’ll never find a new boyfriend if she continues to leave the house in a pony-tail and Ugg’s.

And when she does land a boyfriend, there are always those early moments of feeling the other guy out. Both guys are thinking,” Just who is this Dude hanging around my girlfriend, and what exactly are his motives?” That’s certainly what I thought when she started dating Gert. He was a (slightly taller than me) German who had spent his entire life in El Paso, Texas. He moved to Dallas after college and was charmed by Kylie the moment he met her. Ohh, and everything he knew about gays he had learned from TV.

Our first interaction was at a group dinner out. Afterwards, another friend asked me if Gert spoke much English because he had only said about 5 words the whole evening….placing his order.

He didn’t have much to say……..He was busy feeling me out.

One night, Gert (prompted by Kylie, of course) took me to dinner to thank me for taking care of his Guinea pigs while he was out of town. Like anyone would ever have to pay me back for Guinea pig sitting.

It was the first time the 2 of us were together without Kylie.

He rushed back to tell her that “Pleated shorts were O. U. T.” and he wasn’t sure who Taye Diggs was before, but now he knows “that he is a tall drink of Hot Chocolate”.

He had found in me a friend to truly hang out with. I now had someone to drink beer with and we both had Kylie to drive us home after all that hanging out beer drinking. But most importantly, I knew he was someone who could be everything for her that I couldn’t be.

Now, years later, I can’t imagine what my life would be like without either one of them in it.

They got married on Maui a few years ago.

Gert and Kylie on Maui

Of course Jamie and I were there ……. and then we stuck around for the honeymoon as well.

All of it. We honestly didn’t mean too, but we did.

Packaged deal, remember?

Here are several gratuitous pictures of the 4 of us eating…….In Puerto Rico,

Dinner at Jam

On our Caribbean Cruise,

Last Dinner on the Cruise

and my birthday…..

Jamie, James, Kylie, and Gert November 18 2012

There are a LOT of pictures of us eating……

When I heard that they were expecting a baby in April – I was just about to bust.

Maddie in Womb

I have been collecting baby clothes for them since their wedding. Honestly, almost about to give up and donate everything to “designer clothes needing” children when they finally broke the news. I was beginning to have this fear of dying and my family being thoroughly “creeped out” by finding boxes of baby clothes in my garage. A LOT of boxes.

…. and all little girl’s clothes.

I just knew they would have a girl.

…and yesterday, They did just that….

Maddie's Here

We welcome Madeleine Maurine Peck into our lives……

The Indian Hawthorn is Outta Here

Posted by James on April 11, 2013
Posted in: New Home. Tagged: flower beds. 19 Comments

Good riddance.

We never liked that stuff.

Here’s a picture for the front corner of the house about 2 (has it really been that long) years ago when we painted the eaves chocolate-brown.

Front Corner with Indian Hawthorne

The Pampas grass we planted so I wouldn’t have to look at the gas meter, and the fan palm and rosemary are all huge now.

The Hawthorn? It hasn’t changed since this picture.

Jamie Clipping the Branches

Jamie clipped down the branches as far as he could.

Close Up of Jamie Clipping the Branches

…then we painstakingly pulled the root balls out with our hands …..and occasionally a pick axe.

Took most of the day to get to this point. Just one side of the front yard.

Front of House Without Hawthorne

We were exhausted….but still had energy to shop for some stone.

That’s right……..we added a retaining wall. (By We, I mean Jamie by himself)

Custom Stone has been my favorite place to buy rocks for about 20 years now. They have everything. And their prices can’t be beat.

Stone to Choose from At Dallas Stone Supply

All we knew was that we wanted a sandy colored wall to hold all the vegetation in….

Jamie Picking a Stone

Custom Stone has a delivery service, but there is a 4 ton minimum. 4 tons seems like a LOT of rocks. A lot more than we would need.

Since they charge by the ton, they simply weigh your vehicle before and after loading the stones. Then charge for the difference in weight.

Pretty simple.

Jamie's Car Filled with Pavers

B T W , We got 1/5 of a ton. Of Arizona Buckskin Ledgestone, in case you were wondering.

Then back home to lay out the perimeters of our wall with stakes and string…….oooh and a level.

Running a String from Stake to Stake

Jamie started by dry fitting all the rocks.

Dryfitting the Wall

Then he went back and glued them together with liquid nails.

Finished Wall

Not too shabby,

Yes, I am having a small amount of panic about filling in that much space with plants. I know , I know…they get bigger after you plant them.

It just looks so “naked” right now.

Mostly, I miss my Christmas lights.

Guess we’ll have to address that in December

Cowboy Boots – The Art & Sole

Posted by James on April 9, 2013
Posted in: New Home. Tagged: Cowboy Boots, Jennifer June, justin ropers. 8 Comments

This week I discovered a real gem.

Cowboy Boots the Art & Sole

Cowboy Boots The Art & Sole, by Jennifer June and photographs by Marty Snortum.

This is one of those rare books where it’s just as good of a read on the history and artistry of cowboy boots as it is a photography book filled with beautiful images from some very personal collections.

Here are a few of my favorites…..

Cowboy Boots 1

Cowboy Boots 2

Cowboy Boots 3

Cowboy Boots 4

Cowboy Boots 5

Y’all can keep up with Jenn and her boot fascination on her website. DimLights.com

I know the cover image on this book is stunning, but look how great it looks without the dust jacket.

Cowboy Boots the Art & Sole without the Dust Jacket

Growing up in Texas, you learn quickly how important a man’s boots are for judging his character.

Wanna know what he’s worth?

Look at his boots,

Red Wings coated in mud = a hard-worker, his hands will be rough and calloused. This guy will squat in the rain on the side of the road to help a stranger with a flat tire.

Lucchese ostrich with a high polish = a man who enjoys the finer things in life and takes care of them as well. This guy’s handshake is as good as his word. (Unless he’s J.R. Ewing)

My favorite boots? That’s pretty easy, my 20+-year-old suede Justin ropers with the hole in the right little toe area. They aren’t nearly as unique as the boots in this book but I wouldn’t trade them for the world. I’ve had them resoled 3 times now, and they are still as comfortable as just wearing socks alone.

My Perfectly Worn In Justin Ropers

What do they say about me? That I appreciate the classics that just get better with age and I’d rather have something with a story to tell than “factory new” any ol’ day. (But y’all already knew that about me)

Yes, they are a little bit more sedate than the boots in this book, OK – much more sedate, but I may have been persuaded to invest in some with a little more flare.

Y’all just might be too.

I suggest hoping over to Amazon right now and grabbing a copy of this book before they’re all gone.

Go on, get one……

You’ll thank me.

Grey’s Room Inspiration

Posted by James on April 7, 2013
Posted in: New Home. Tagged: Advice, Bedroom, Pottery Barn, Target Sheets. 10 Comments
This is a first,
A reader of ours asked if we had any decor advice for her 16-year-old son’s room.
There were a couple of lengthy emails detailing the objects he has accumulated and the meaning behind them.
She writes:
“About Grey:
As I mentioned, he’s sixteen.  He is a venture crew scout and loves the outdoors.  He has been on fifty mile hikes, and canoe trips.  He’s been diving and caving, etc.  He doesn’t mind the heat, cold, no shower thing.  He is a wrestler.  Yes, those are wrestling shoes on his headboard!  He likes cars and skateboarding.  He likes hunting, fishing and target shooting.  He’s not a huge gaming kid.  He would rather do it for real.  He loves to go paint balling.  He’s into music and played percussion in middle school and his first year of high school
My boy…”
Here are the pictures she included…..
Grey's Room Collage
Looks like a teenegers room to me,
But overall, a pretty good start……..
Here’s my advice:
Kim,
First of all, I’m flattered….SOOO very flattered. (my friends never ask my advice…they think my house is too junky) …….and I’m extremely relieved to know that my style is perfectly suited for a teen boy. It’s a little “fluffy” with all the pillows sometimes…but there is a lot of wood and metal and toys and old things.
I’d love to help with Grey’s room. He has so much cool stuff in there…LOVE the tool cabinet as a bedside table…..I may steal that idea for the guest room. And I love the old wood cabinet (pie safe?) on the wall to the bathroom.
Don’t like the wall color so much….is it a “sage green”? It’s hard to tell. What about a cool blue gray color…or steely blue.  Just NOT the same color as the wood cabinet. (BTW, if he outgrows that peice…..I’ll gladly take it off your hands.)
But DO paint the ceiling back to white…it reflects light down in a small room. Makes it a little less cave-like.
If he doesn’t like the idea of the wood wall, you can always paint just the wall the bed is on a much darker shade of the blue or gray. And yes, the bed could be painted black, I think black furniture “grounds” a room. Our master bed is satin, but the guest bed is gloss – because that’s all I had at the house at the time and was too lazy to go to Home Depot.
If he likes the pipe things, and has the energy, a pipe and wood shelving unit could be cool on the wall where the magnetic phallus currently is. They are pretty easy to make any size that he needs…..
Pipe Shelves
Here’s a link to an excellent tutorial http://www.the-brick-house.com/2009/09/shelving-unit/
Here are those above shelves covered in “boy crap”….
Pipe Shelves Styled
Perfect place to maybe put the TV, Peace Sign, severed turkey wings, giant fishing lures, animal skin, or even athletic shoes so he doesn’t have to sleep with them 6 inches from his face.
(boys)
Love the old wood boxes above, ……but metal tool boxes, fishing tackle boxes, or wire locker baskets will store even more of his trinkets and treasures..
That jar of bottle caps would be great here too…we have jars of everything in our house (bottle caps, corks, baseballs, matchbooks, Milk Bones, and even Matchbox cars)
And/or you could us plumbing pipes as curtain rods over the window.
Our curtains are all drop cloths from Home Depot with Grommets and shower curtain rings…….on plumbing pipes like these.
BUT since he like the outdoors…….what about a wooden paddle over the window?
These start at only $12 at Bass Pro Shop and Cabela’s depending on the length you need.
I really dig the flags in the picture. Didn’t you say the he likes flags? The ones above are attached with loose zip strips. VERY easy to do.
Also Love the jersey in the shadow box, but why not shadow box some of those wrestling medals too. A grouping of them either hanging over the bed could be really cool. Maybe like this …with or without the jerseys.
It might be time for a new lamp on the side of the bed? I’ll guessing that the current one was a “hand-me-down”. This one is a little more masculine….and from PoteryBarnTeen only $50
Wood Task Lamp
Keep the brown duck comforter he loves and give him some new sheets in a different color. Jersey sheets are amazingly soft…like sleeping on a giant t-shirt.
Target has twin sets for $20.
Room Essentials® Jersey Sheet Set - Heathers and Prints
I hope I haven’t overwhelmed you, but once I got started I couldn’t stop. It was seriously fun….you’re lucky that you caught me on spring break with a little time on my hands this morning.
I hope you and Grey like the suggestions. We’d love to see what happens in there.
All my Best,
James

Frankoma Pottery

Posted by James on April 2, 2013
Posted in: Did Ya Know?, New Home. Tagged: Frankoma pottery. 18 Comments

When my dear friend Lenny sent me a picture from an antique store of a pottery Indian maiden with a bowl in her lap…..

I was instantly obsessed.

He, as well as I, had a vision of that bowl filled with small silver and turquoise trinkets. The kind of trinkets that I currently have non-Indian maiden shaped bowls filled with.

eBay solved that issue for me,

Frankoma Indian Maiden with Bowl

It wasn’t long before she was sitting on my desk and her bowl was filled with all these little wonderous things….

(a few small Zuni fetishes, silver/turquoise crosses, a couple Fred Harvey pins, and Hunter S. Thompson for Sheriff buttons…..you know, all the usual desk clutter)

Trinkets in the Indian Maiden Bowl

But there was still more to come.

I found this dancing Indian chief on eBay too.

Frankoma Dancing Indian Chief

He landed on my desk right next to his mate.

Then I found this groovy arrow-head ashtray….just imagine the wonders this thing could hold……

How about wrangling keys and loose change near the front door?

Frankoma Arrow Shaped Ashtray

Too bad it’s only 4 inched long…..

4 inch Frankoma Arrow Head Ashtray

Not big enough to hold much of anything, but still pretty cool.

These were all made by the Frankoma Pottery company.

Frankoma Pottery was founded by University of Oklahoma professor John Frank in 1933. He named his newly founded company Frankoma; using his last name and the last 3 letters of the state he lived in……Oklahoma. Frank originally used the light hued Ada clay for his pottery, but then switched to locally sourced brick-red clay.

Other than the native figures and ashtrays, the couple also developed china in western-themed patterns like Plainsman, West Wind,

Ranch,

Frankoma Ranch Black Dinner Plate

Native American,

Frankoma Native American Plate in White

and Wagon Wheel.

Frankoma Wagon Wheel Dinner Plate

Frank and his wife Grace Lee continued to run the company until his death in 1973, leaving the company to their daughter Joniece who was forced to sell for bankruptcy reasons in 1991. Frankoma finally closed their factory doors in 2004.

Next time y’all see a piece that looks distinctly “Oklahomian?”,

….flip it over,

Because it just might be a piece of Frankoma.

All you need to do it give the Communication Department a call and request it. 816-383-5100

But that’s not all. They have tons of literature and other posters to offer as well. Because that’s what they do.

This one is just my favorite.

Now to find a cost-effective way to frame it….The thumb tacks just aren’t cutting it for me.
