Like most junkers, I occasionally bring home junk.

Like these old license plates.

Assorted Old License Plates I've Collected Over the Years

I have many, many….(sigh) many more. These are just a few of my faves.

Truth be told, I still have the old ones off my previous vehicles. Hard to part with anything.

I thought it might be cool to cover the bathroom walls like this awesomeness…..

Bathroom Walls Plastered in License Plates

(photo via Houzz)

Looks like the men’s room at a dive bar. Not that that is always a bad thing. (Pretty sure the urinals are just out of view)

Our tastes have matured a little – just a little – and we want our bathrooms to look a little bit ……. cleaner.

I could use those old plates to make a statement art piece.

Like this great grouping in this pretty traditional living room.

Or some sort of hanging room divider in the backyard, like this one….

Looks pretty easy to make, just need some short lengths of chain.

But with tin snips, I could make something like these….

Mickey Mouse License Plate Art

This one is for my friend Kay.

Indiana Cardinal Art bt Design Turnpike

(via Design Turnpike)

Or maybe something that really looks like a challenge.

This one from Design Turnpike  looks tough to copy. Good thing it’s purchasable – $1999 and another $250 to ship – and it’s friggin’ huge…

I love the way the plates match their respective states.

License Plate USA Map Made by Design Turnpike

At 60 inches wide by 40 inches tall….it makes a statement, especially in a “Boy’s Room”.

United States in License pLates on a Boy's Room Wall

Since our whole house is one big “Boy’s Room”, it would fit in with the rest of the junk just nicely.

This American Flag is pretty groovy as well, same price, same size (I think we’d have a much easier time making one like this)

Large License Plate Flag from Design Turnpike

Maybe I’m thinking a little big.

I’ve always liked these clocks…

License Plate Clock

(via TerrysVillage)

This clock looks pretty simple to make.

Just need a clock kit…..and a drill.

Kansas License PLate Clock

Plenty of inspiration out there on the World Wide Web…..

Especially Pinterest

So what did we decide to do with those old license plates?

Y’all will just have to check back and see.

(Seriously, I was going to attach the project to this post, but it was so darn long…)

“Drunk Last Night” a Neighborhood Tour

Posted by James on March 10, 2014
Posted in: Did Ya Know?, New Home. Tagged: Belmont Hotel, Chicken Scratch, Drunk Last Night, Eli Young Band, Oak Cliff Dallas, Oak Cliff Tour, Smoke Restaurant Dallas, The Belmont Hotel Oak Cliff, The Foundry, The Foundry Biscuit. 2 Comments

Got a little drunk last night…..

No, not me..

The Eli Young Band did.

Last weekend Jamie dragged me to a country bar. I have trouble hearing in crowded places, so I watched the videos…….most of which I’ve never seen before.

Like Drunk Last Night by the Eli Young Band.

I like classic rock and 80’s alternative, Jamie prefers techno and divas, but we’re both open to everything……. I liked this song and downloaded it onto my iPod immediately.

Sure, Mr Eli could use a little help from an “Arm Choreographer”, he moves them in an uncomfortable looking C3-PO fashion. But it’s a catchy tune. I Googled them and apparently the Eli Young Band, formed in Denton, Texas BTW, won Song of the Year from the Academy of Country Music a couple years ago. Good work, boys.

Still never heard of them before.

So why all the hullabaloo about a band I hardly know?

Because their video was filmed in our neighborhood. Oak Cliff, of all places.

The bedroom scenes are at the Belmont Hotel, the boys are performing on the shipping pallet stage at the Foundry. They drink boilermakers, flirt with a tattooed bartender-ess and shoot pool at the Foundry bar. Our hero calls for a pre-moistened cab from the only pay phone booth left in Dallas in front of SMOKE Restaurant. I’d recognize those orange Umbra chairs and, Man-ohh-Man, that arrow sign pointing to the front door anywhere.

So, how about a little walking tour of our neighborhood as highlighted in the Drunk Last Night video?

The Belmont Hotel was designed in 1946 by famed architect Charles Dilbeck in the art moderne design and is the only public building that he ever designed. The entire cliff it sits upon was trucked-in and created just to take advantage of the spectacular view of downtown Dallas. It was also one of the first hotels to offer year-round air conditioning. The Belmont was abandoned in the 80’s and set vacant for years until Monte Anderson and his team of contractors saw the potential and restored the building to its former glory in 2005. The Bar Belmont is the best view of downtown Dallas and during the summer evenings the hotel shows free drive-in movies on the lawn by the pool.

Beautiful Sign for the Belmont Hotel in Oak Cliff

SMOKE restaurant shares a parking lot, and the same Dilbeck designed art modern lines, with the Belmont Hotel. It should, after all, in another lifetime the building was the diner for the hotel. This place just smells like you would expect Texas to smell…like BBQ. But not your average brisket….coffee rubbed brisket. Or try something a little more exotic like pate with smoked onion marmalade, or sweet breads with roasted figs, or cabrito with green apple salsa.

Definitely not your average BBQ joint.

Smoke Restaurant in Oak Cliff Dallas

Smoke Collage

If this arrow ever disappears from the building….there might be a slight possibility that it’s in my den. Just sayin’.

Vintage Arrow Over the Front Door at Smoke in Oak Cliff

Across the street from both of these beautiful buildings….is the not quite attractive front for the Foundry.

The Foundry and Chicken Scratch in Oak Cliff Dallas

Behind that U.G.L.Y. parking structure the beer garden awaits….I wouldn’t usually describe a place as feeling “Austin-ish”. But if you have never been to Austin, Texas…this place just exudes the same laid back, outdoorsy feel that every place in Austin does.

The garage doors to the bar are usually up and open continuing the outside is inside feel of this place.

Mostly Texas beers on tap too.

As it should be.

The Beer Garden at the Foundry in Oak Cliff

Picnic Tables Across the Beer Garden at the Foundry in Oak Cliff Dallas

The stage made from reclaimed shipping pallets has live music on every evening where the weather permits.

The Foundry never charges a cover.

In the summer……..this place is packed with Cliff-dwellers enjoying local draft beer and free music.

Stage Constructed of Shipping Pallets at the Foundry in Oak Cliff Dallas

Did I mention the food?

Attached to the Foundry, actually it’s the same owners, is Chicken Scratch serving up street tacos, tremendous salads, and …. well, chicken. Rotisserie and fried.

Waiter With Tray of Fried Chicken at Chicken Scratch and the Foundry in Oak Cliff

It’s a well-known Oak Cliff fact that Chicken Scratch serves some pretty perfect hangover cures.

Like the Foundry Biscuit; fried chicken, mashed potatoes, smoked slab bacon, cheese, and grainy beer mustard nestled in a buttery flakey biscuit.

The Foundry Chicken Biscuit and Mac-N-Cheese with Hominy and Green Chilis at Chicken Scratch

Is your mouth watering yet?

I got mine with a side of the green chili hominy mac-n-cheese.

I happened to run into my good friend Darrell. Who, along with some other hung over friends of his, were all munching on chicken and waffles.

Because they….are y’all ready for the punchline?

…got Drunk Last Night.

So check out all of these places if y’all get the chance.

3 more reasons that we love our neighborhood.

Meet Mike Wolfe

Mike Wolfe…..

From American Pickers?

Yepp, this guy….

American Picker Mike Wolf in his Dining Room

Nashville Lifestyles Magazine did a spread on his Leiper’s Fork, Tennessee house. I know! Doesn’t that sound exciting? I thought so too.

Well, for some odd reason there are hardly any pictures of the actual house.

Here are the best ones that I could find.

Even the exterior shot looks like a game of “Find The House?”

Exterior of Mike Wolfe's House Near Nashville Tennesse

(photos by Kristin Barlowe, in case she wants credit for these duds)

Thanks to the architect using reclaimed doors, windows and other tidbits the house has all the character of a century old estate, and it’s only 12 years old. There’s a hidden office behind a swinging bookcase, there are wide staircases opening the center of the house, and even four separate porches. The previous owner, also a motorcycle collector, kept his bike collection in the finished basement. There’s access via a garage door.

“Oh my God, I’m taking this house!” he said as soon as he saw that basement garage door. It was as if the whole space were custom-made just for him.

Now, you might expect a bicycle/motorcycle fanatic like Mike to cruise around his 32 acre property on a vintage 2-wheeler, but no….he opts for this cool-as-hell red vintage Ford pickup.

Don’t blame him one bit…….I would too.

Mike Wolfe in his Vintage red Ford Pickup

Sure, you know that Mike spends his days digging through dilapidated barns, in his custom-made imogene + willie jeans, for “Rusty Gold”. My dream job. (Who am I kidding, I have my dream job…picking junk would be my fall-back dream job) But what does he do with all those odd-ball things he uncovers? Recently Mike teamed up with Nashville designer Dave Phillips to create one-of-a-kind light fixtures. Lovingly called Rustorations. The guys use vintage buckets, funnels, hay pulleys and fans to make pendants and floor lamps. If it can be wired for electricity…it’s fair game for the pair and their imaginations.

Here are a few of my favorites.

(photos from Antique Archeology)

Aren’t they just freaking awesome?

Unfortunately, each is one of a kind…with no prices listed online…..and can only be purchased in one of Mike’s shops; Antique Archeology.

The original location is in LaClaire, Iowa and the newest in Nashville, Tennessee.

Nashville, that’s not too far from Leiper’s Fork, I suppose.

Probably just a quick ride in a vintage Ford pickup.

Has it Really Been 4 Years?

Posted by James on February 26, 2014
Posted in: New Home. Tagged: 4 Year Anniversary, Year in Review. 15 Comments

Has it really been 4 years since we got the keys to the Cavender house?

This humble little blog started only a few weeks before that. (Please don’t look at the first few posts…..they’re a little …..ummm, rough)

Instead, look at these posts…

…and marvel at all the accomplishments we’ve made, projects we’ve completed, and humorous stories we’ve recounted from this past year.

We tore out the Indian Hawthorne bushes in the front yard……and created the hot-weather flower beds of our dreams.

Flower Beds on the Right Side of the House full of Plants

Just overflowing with cacti, agave, rosemary…..(still waiting to see how much of it survives this frozen winter we’ve been having)

We cleaned up the side of our house in a big way; rebuilt the gates, added a tool shed, potting bench, and about 10 car-loads of pea gravel.

Side of the House with the Tool Shed and the Potting Bench

We worked some more in the garage too; finished planking the cedar walls, and installed hanging factory pendants.

Garage Right Side Wall of Stuff

Jealous yet?

We also updated our old coffee table…

Pallet Coffee Table in Living Room

Built tabletop easels…

Finished Pottery Barn Table Top Easel

Made oil can candles…

Finished Oil Can Candles

We even built a vintage inspired dog bed for our Doberman, Harley Davidson,

Harley and her Painted Nails on the New Dog Bed

Can’t get enough of our baby girl? Read about her adventures at daycare, or my personal favorite, the story of her adoption.

I recalled a few of my favorite stories this past year; my frat party catering disaster, my old friend Lenny’s shopping embarrassment, and my little brother Josh’s speech impediment.

We had a slightly disastrous vacation to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico this summer.

Jamie on the Beach in Cabo

Not as quite as terrible as some past trips, but still worth reading about.

It was a big year for our dear friends the Pecks too…

They welcomed little Madeleine into their lives, and we threw them a monumental baby shower.

Kylie, Gert, James and Jamie at Maddie's Shower

Gift ideas? Well yes, we threw out a few of those too,

How about a “Movie Night in a Popcorn Bowl“?

Our Finished Movie Night in a Bowl

or maybe even better, Cucumber Infused Vodka,

Delish!

And what does the next year have in store?

A new bathroom? A deck? Perhaps crown molding? Maybe we’ll finally get around to painting the garage floor….

We just scheduled another beach vacation……with the Pecks again (AND the baby). Let’s just hope that they aren’t the hurricane magnets that we are.

Isn’t that baby having a birthday soon? HHmmmm

How about a few new cocktail ideas? Or lemon bars? Jamie gave me a book on making beer for Christmas……..OOOhhhh, I’ve said too much already.

Y’all will just have to stick around and see what we do this year.

Life’s a Banquette…

Posted by James on February 23, 2014
Posted in: New Home, Projects. Tagged: banquette, Breakfast Room, Build a Banquette, Kitchen. 12 Comments

I’m not a carpenter.

I am a set builder. Sets that are temporary, and really only have to look good from the front. They honestly don’t even have to be functional. (Usually they aren’t)

I think that I’m pretty good at it. That confidence has possibly gone to my head a little, and after this project, I have a new-found appreciation for true carpenters.

I know that I make everything look easy, it’s a gift, but building the 2X4 frame for this beast kinda kicked my behind.

Let’s start at the beginning……

For a few years now, we have been living with the “dog sofa” in our breakfast nook. It’s covered in a rug because it’s, well, a “dog sofa”…. and it’s kinda gross.

Dog Sofa as the Current Banquet

In my last few houses, my old dog Faust slept on this sofa every night. That’s when it was at the foot of my bed. In this house, and with a new dog, it’s been parked under that window. Harley doesn’t have any interest in it.

We love it.

It’s the perfect place to curl up, nestled in the pillows with coffee and a bowl of cereal, and surf those morning emails.

But we need something bigger, cleaner, and with storage.

I started with the dimensions of the frame, I sketched something like this….So I knew how much wood to buy.

EPSON MFP image

…….and to get an idea for the size of the 2 doors on the seat that will open so we can keep stuff in there.

Function/Storage…..what could be better?

I gently pulled off the baseboards so my banquette will be flush with the wall. (Look at all those previous paint colors; antique white, turquoise, and another shade of turquoise)

Carefully Remove all the Trim

Because storage is the ultimate goal, before I attached anything to anything, I “dry fit” my pieces around a tub to make sure there is plenty of room inside.

Early Stages of the Banquet Framing

I lay out the structure for my front and attached all my 2 X 4’s with drywall screws.

Front Framing for Banquet

On the ends, I added a piece that will connect to my sides.

Notched Out Edge to Connect the Pieces

With an angled drill guide clamped on, I made pilot holes to connect my corners with drywall screws and add even more support.

This is the part where I went crazy adding more and more 2X4 pieces in every possible configuration……

Use an Angled Drill Guide to make Pilot Holes to Connect

Since I didn’t want to destroy the side of the existing kitchen cabinets, or the tile floor, I only attached my banquette pieces to the back wall.

If we really had to, I could unscrew the back pieces and the whole unit would gently slide forward leaving just a few drywall holes to patch.

Completed Frame for Our Kitchen Banquet 2

This is right where I want my bubble to be.

Perfect.

Perfectly Level

I cut to fit 2 panels of birch plywood to cover the front and tacked them on with brads…..

Fitting the front Panels on

…and used 1 X 2’s as trim pieces to hide all my edges.

Front of the Banquet with Trim Pieces Added

For the top we grabbed a sheet of 1 inch thick pine plywood from Home Depot and they cut it down for us to 81 1/2 by 29 1/2.

It almost fit perfectly inside the top….

Pine Plywood Piece for the Top

I would have shaved off a corner, but I knew that once we cut those 27 X 38 inch doors….everything would fit just perfectly.

And it did.

Pine Pieces Cut for the Top of Banquet

I used a combination of hand-held circular saw and a jig saw to cut these. (a saw blade cut will take about 1/4 inch off…..so always adjust accordingly)

A Quarter Inch Gap Between My Pieces

There’s going to be a cushion on the top, and no one will really ever see it….but I gave the whole banquette a coat of satin polyurethane anyway.

Piano hinges were screwed across the back of each lid, and then I drilled a finger hole in each with a 1 inch paddle bit.

Using a 1 inch Paddle Bit to Make the Finger Hole in the Lid

My banquette front is pretty similar looking to the birch cabinet doors we already had in the kitchen…

IMG_0818

I just needed to add a little quarter round trim to finish them off……OOhhhh, and I fill all my nail holes with blond spackle.

Quarter Round Molding Added to Front of the Bench

Much better, right?

This is the first step in moving my glass Christmas ornament hoard collection from the master bath shower….and they all fit. (With room to add a few more over the years. Yeah)

That’s why the 2X4 frame had to be extra sturdy.

How terrible would it be if it collapsed in the middle of a party?

Our New Banquet Filled with Christmas Ornaments

Yeppers, Tough project,

With spectacular results.

And Big too……

It’s almost the size of a twin bed.

Finished Banquette in the Breakfast Area of our Kitchen

The banquette cushion, that’s a whole other post. Jamie just wrapped it in a drop cloth for now…but we have big plans for a cover.

Big plans for the master bathroom too.

Now that the shower is no longer being used for ornament storage, we can start demolition on the master bathroom…..

Of course, only after I explain in great, lengthy detail the story of the banquette cushion.

Stay tuned…..

Opener Sesame

Posted by James on February 19, 2014
Posted in: Did Ya Know?, New Home. Tagged: Chamberlain Remote, Garage Door Opener Remote. 2 Comments

We live in a “Transitional” neighborhood.

Essentially, “Transitional” means there are some low-income residents driving down property values, and another group of middle-class residents taking advantage of those low property values……..like us.

My Jeep was broken into last week. Parked in the driveway, Second time in 3 years.

Transitional neighborhood.

Not only did they take my radio…they took my jumper cables, a handful of tools, my Iphone charger, several CD’s, and my road-side emergency kit.

They left the garage door remote.

Stupid move, because there’s WAAAAAYYYYY better stuff in the garage than “slick look” tire spray and vintage road-side flares.

Our neighbor Carol, the official neighborhood Gladys Kravitz because her property is speckled with cameras that she monitors all day, was floored that we even keep our remotes in our cars. Anyone could use it to access the house. And with complete ease too…..we rarely lock the door between the kitchen and the garage. After all, we have a house alarm…and a Doberman. But still, unnerving.

It’s just not a good idea to leave a garage door remote in the car. Period

Didn’t know that there was an option other than unhooking it from the visor every time I leave the car. Monotonous, don’t cha think?

Well, there is another way……

Chamberlain Keychain Remote Control for the Garage Door

The Chamberlain key chain remote control. Only 27 bucks on Amazon here.

In a matter of minutes, Jamie had programmed both units, one for each of us, to work with our existing garage door opener.

……and the whole little unit just hooks onto my key ring. (only slightly larger than my Jeep key)

Chamberlain Key Chain Garage Door Remote Opener on Keyring

No more leaving the garage door remotes in our cars……

I feel safer already.

We Hate Our Bathroom

Posted by James on February 16, 2014
Posted in: New Home. Tagged: Bathroom, Bathroom Remodeling, DIY Network Star, Master Bathroom, Matt Muenster. 33 Comments

That’s right,

We just hate it.

For the past 4 years, our entire “Master Bathroom Remodeling Plan” has been to scope out our local Home Depot, tackle Matt Muenster (the bathroom renovation guru on the DIY network), and convince him to come home with us….

……it hasn’t happened yet.

And then, last week…….I ran into him.

James with Matt Muenster on a Denver Street Corner

Here’s how it went down:

After creepily staring at this guy, and convincing myself that Matt Muenster had better things to do than stand on a Denver street corner at midnight, I gave it a shot anyway and shouted towards his back.

Me: “Matt?”

Matt: (turning to face me now) “Ohhh, Hi.”… It was him.

Me: “What are you doing in Denver?”

Matt: “You know, finishing up a bathroom.” Of course he was.

Me: “I have 2 pretty terrible ones that you can work on back in Dallas.”

Matt: (no response)

At this point I pulled out my phone, tapped the camera icon, and handed it to my coworker Stephen…… not even asking if I could get a picture. (or even asking Stephen if he could take a picture for me) Pretty sure that Matt was used to this behavior, because he instinctively put his arm around me and smiled toward Stephen holding my phone.

FLASH

Me: “My partner is just gunna die when I tell him that I found you.” (don’t I get a prize for finding him? Pretty sure that’s the objective of the show)

Matt: “What was your name?” extending his hand to shake mine.

Me: “James,” grabbing his hand……here was my chance, “I actually have a blog and I’ve been blogging about our home renovation for the past 4 years.” (he seemed like the perfect man to share this information with)

Matt: Retrieving his hand. “Well, I gotta go.” He turned and walked the other way.

Stephen: (Not knowing who Matt Muenster is), “Did you go to school with him or something?”

Looks like the Matt Muenster Bathroom Renovation Plan isn’t going to work after all.

Maybe this year, we take matters into our own tentacles.

Here is the shameful, shameful ugliness that we have been living with for the past 4 years.

Popcorn Ceiling in the Master Bathroom

I promise y’all, it looks much worse in person….and, it kinda smells like ……. “tinkle”.

How about that popcorn ceiling? The safety railing? The peel-n-stick vinyl floor tiles?

The tiny little sink…off-centered from the tiny little mirror.

The shower head is about 5 feet up, in fact, neither of us really fit in the shower stall anyway .”Oy Vey”

Can’t picture it, but the floor sags from water damage near the shower.

The white-ISH tile wouldn’t be so bad, if it didn’t have that flakey gold band….

Anyhoo…..We promise that this will be the last year we live with this unused space.

Maybe we’ll do something like this…

Master Bathroom Inspiration

Master Bathroom Inspiration 2

Master Bathroom Inspiration3

Haven’t quite pinpointed the design…but some elements from all 3 of these. (Slate floor, wood, metal, modern-ish sink)

Stay tuned….

It should be quite an interesting year.

With or without Matt Muenster.

Stained Glass Heart Cookies

Stained Glass Heart Cookies from the Cavender Diary

Jamie wanted to try something different in the cookie department this week .

…and we had several different heart-shaped cookie cutters.

Stained glass cookies seemed like a logical choice,

2 Sizes of Heart Shapped Cookie Cutters

I’ll skim through the dough recipe, because it’s so standard, but here’s the gist…

Start with:

  • 1 1/2 cups of room-temperature butter
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Slowly stir in the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cover, and chill dough for at least one hour.

Jamie chilled his dough overnight in the icebox then rolled it flat (about 1/4 inch thick) on a well floured cutting board.

Jamie Rolling out the Sugar Cookie Dough

He started with the large heart cutter…….

Using the Heart Shapper Cutter

Then placed them on a foil-wrapped cookie sheet, before cutting out the smaller heart.

After the Cookies are on the Baking Sheet, Cut Out the Small Heart

They don’t spread much, but be sure to space them evenly on the cookie sheet.

“Why foil?” you may ask.

The foil makes it easier to peel the melted candy off after the cookies cool.

All the Center Hearts Cut Out

Now the fun part….adding the Wild Cherry Lifesavers.

Wild Cherry Lifesaver Collage

We found that 3 lifesavers fit inside the small heart cut-out just perfectly.

Be sure to use fresh lifesavers. Some of ours melted a little cloudy, and our only guess as to why is that they may have been a little…..ummm, old.

Beautifully Spaced Out Cookies Ready for Baking

For texture, Jamie sprinkled each cookie with just a little bit of chunky sugar.

Sprinkle with White Sugar Before Baking

Here’s a good trick too, chill the whole cookie sheet of unbaked cookies for about 10 minutes before baking.

Into the 400 degree oven for about 6-8 minutes, our thick cookies took about 10 minutes.

Because our cookies were a little thick, we watched them closely to make sure the lifesavers had melted completely and the cookies were just slightly brown.

Like these……

Perfectly Melted Lifesaver Centers

Here’s another important trick: Let the cookies cool completely on the foil covered sheets before removing.

You will have to peel the candy part off the foil.

Then onto drying racks.

Finished Stain Glass Hearts Cooling on the Racks

Not all, but most of the lifesavers melted clear….like stained glass.

The Center of the Cookies Looks Like Stained Glass

Overall, charming, charming cookies……

Stained Glass Heart Cookies from the Cavender Diary

Give them a shot sometime……the results look complicated,

The process,

pretty easy.

Little Tin Miracles

Posted by James on February 11, 2014
Posted in: Did Ya Know?, New Home. Tagged: Heart Milagros Meaning, Spanish Milagros. 2 Comments

“Milagros” means miracles in spanish.

…and that’s what these are. Or, are supposed to provide. Kinda of,

Maybe I should start at the beginning……

Milagros are small religious folk charms found throughout Latin America, especially Mexico and Peru. They are also used in Europe, there they are called “exvotos”, or offerings. These small charms, usually about 1/2 in size, but can be as big as 6-8 inches, are most often made of pressed tin, but they can also be gold, silver, wood and even wax. Milagros are usually purchased from street vendors outside churches, shrines, and other places of worship.

These little offerings are nailed to (or even pinned to the clothing of ) saint statues, hung with red ribbon on altars, shrines, and other sacred objects (even people, as many are made into jewelry) as part of an act of devotion. Milagros are offered as a symbol to a saint as a reminder of a special need, or as a “thank you” for answering a prayer. Sometimes they are used to focus attention towards a specific ailment, and even just carried for protection and good fortune.

These small charms depict a huge number of subjects; body parts (like hearts, heads, crossed arms and legs), houses, farm animals, babies, and people praying. Their symbolism is not universal and seems to be up to whatever the bearer intended the prayer to be for. For example; a leg milagro might be a prayer to heal someones leg or foot, or it could be a desire to have a visitor or travel themselves. There are no wrong answers.

The heart milagro is the most common offering. Unlike American Valentine’s Day hearts, the traditional heart milagro is usually anatomically correct; some even have blood vessels coursing across the front. Here’s a handful of “classic” heart milagros that I’ve picked up in my travels to Mexico and around the Southwest.

The meaning for these heart-shaped charms can be as diverse as healing for a heart or circulatory condition or to bring passion to your life.

But mostly, a heart milagro represents love, healing, and gratitude.
